Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FEGE EEEE HEHE EHEH EBEB HIHI EEEE IEIE JIJI GHGH EEEK HHHH ELEM EIEI HEHE HEHEThe weary weary days gang by | A |
The weary nichts they fa' | B |
I mauna rest I canna lie | A |
Since my ain bairn's awa' | C |
- | |
The soughing o' the springtide breeze | D |
Abune her heid blaws sweet | E |
There's nests amang the kirkyaird trees | D |
And gowans at her feet | E |
- | |
She gae'd awa' when winds were hie | F |
When the deein' year was cauld | E |
An noo the young year seems to me | G |
A waur ane nor the auld | E |
- | |
And bedded 'twixt the nicht an' day | E |
Yest're'en I couldna bide | E |
For thinkin' thinkin' as I lay | E |
O' the wean that lies outside | E |
- | |
O mickle licht to me was gie'n | H |
To reach my bairn's abode | E |
But heaven micht blast a mither's een | H |
And her feet wad find the road | E |
- | |
The kirkyaird loan alang the brae | E |
Was choked wi' brier and whin | H |
A' i' the dark the stanes were grey | E |
As wraiths when I gae'd in | H |
- | |
The wind cried frae the western airt | E |
Like warlock tongues at strife | B |
But the hand o' fear hauds aff the he'rt | E |
That's lost its care for life | B |
- | |
I sat me lang upon the green | H |
A stanethraw frae the kirk | I |
And syne a licht shone dim between | H |
The shaws o' yew and birk | I |
- | |
'Twas na the wildfire's flame that played | E |
Alang the kirkyaird land | E |
It was a band o' bairns that gae'd | E |
Wi' lichts in till their hand | E |
- | |
O white they cam' yon babie thrang | I |
A' silent o'er the sod | E |
Ye couldna hear their feet amang | I |
The graves sae saft they trod | E |
- | |
And aye the can'les flickered pale | J |
Below the darkened sky | I |
But the licht was like a broken trail | J |
When the third wee bairn gae'd by | I |
- | |
For whaur the can'le flame should be | G |
Was naither blink nor shine | H |
The bairnie turned its face to me | G |
An' I kent that it was mine | H |
- | |
An' O my broken he'rt was sair | E |
I cried My ain my doo' | E |
For a' thae weans the licht burns fair | E |
But it winna' burn for you | K |
- | |
She smiled to me my little Jean | H |
Said she The dule and pain | H |
O mither frae your waefu' een | H |
They strike on me again | H |
- | |
For ither babes the flame leaps bricht | E |
And fair and braw appears | L |
But I canna keep my bonnie licht | E |
For it's droukit wi' your tears | M |
- | |
There blew across my outstreeked hand | E |
The white mist o' her sark | I |
But I couldna reach yon babie band | E |
For it faded i' the dark | I |
- | |
My ain my dear your licht shall burn | H |
Although my een grow blind | E |
Although they twa to saut should turn | H |
Wi' the tears that lie behind | E |
- | |
O Jeanie on my bended knee | H |
I'll pray I may forget | E |
My grief is a' that's left to me | H |
But there's something dearer yet | E |
