Beside the doo'cot up the braesA
The fields slope doon frae meB
An fine's the glint on blawin' daysA
O' the bonnie plains o' seaB
-
Below's my mither's hoosie sma'B
The smiddy by the byreC
Whaur aye my feyther dings awa'D
And my brither blaws the fireC
-
For Lachlan lo'es the smiddy's reekE
An' Geordie's but a fuleF
Wha' drives the plough his breid to seekE
And Rob's to teach the schuleF
-
He'll haver roond the schulehoose wa'sB
And ring the schulehoose bellF
He'll skelp the scholars wi' the tawseB
I'd like that fine mysel'F
-
They're easy pleased my brithers threeC
I hate the smiddy's loweD
A weary dominie I'd beC
An' I canna thole the ploughG
-
But by the doo'cot up the braesB
There's nane frae me can stealF
The blue sea an' the ocean hazeB
An' the ships I like sae weelF
-
The brigs ride oot past FerrydenH
Ahint the girnin' tugsB
And the lasses wave to the Baltic menH
Wi' the gowd rings i' their lugsB
-
My mither's sweir to let me gangI
My feyther gi'es me blameB
But youth is sair and life is langI
When yer he'rt's sae far frae hameB
-
But i' the doo'cot up the braesB
When a'tumn nichts are mirkI
I've hid my pennies an' my claesB
An' the Buik I read at kirkI
-
An' come ae nicht when a' fowks sleepJ
I'll lift them whaur they lieF
An' to the harbour side I'll creepJ
I' the dim licht o' the skyF
-
An' when the eastern blink grows wideK
An' dark still smoors the westL
A Baltic brig will tak' the tideK
Wi' a lad that canna restL
