The willows stand by Fringford brookA
From Fringford up to HetheB
Sun on their cloudy silver headsC
And shadow underneathB
-
They ripple to the silent airsD
That stir the lazy dayE
Now whitened by their passing handsF
Now turned again to greyE
-
The slim marsh thistle's purple plumeG
Droops tasselled on the stemH
The golden hawkweeds pierce like flameI
The grass that harbours themH
-
Long drowning tresses of the weedsJ
Trail where the stream is slowK
The vapoured mauves of water mintL
Melt in the pools belowK
-
Serenely soft September shedsC
On earth her slumberous lookA
The heartbreak of an anguished worldM
Throbs not by Fringford brookA
-
All peace is here Beyond our rangeN
Yet 'neath the selfsame skyO
The boys that knew these fields of homeP
By Flemish willows lieO
-
They waded in the sun shot flowK
They loitered in the shadeQ
Who trod the heavy road of deathB
Jesting and unafraidQ
-
Peace What of peace This glimpse of peaceR
Lies at the heart of painS
For respite ere the spirit's loadT
We stoop to lift againU
-
O load of grief of faith of wrathB
Of patient quenchless willV
Till God shall ease us of your weightW
We'll bear you higher stillV
-
O ghosts that walk by Fringford brookA
'Tis more than peace you giveX
For you who knew so well to dieO
Shall teach us how to liveY
