Back To The Land Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FDGD HIJI DKLK MDND DOPO QIRI

Out in the upland placesA
I see both dale and downB
And the ploughed earth with open scoresC
Turning the green to brownB
-
The bare bones of the countryD
Lie gaunt in winter daysE
Grim fastnesses of rock and scaurD
Sure while the year decaysE
-
And as the autumn withersF
And the winds strip the treeD
The companies of buried folkG
Rise up and speak with meD
-
From homesteads long forgottenH
From graves by church and yewI
They come to walk with noiseless treadJ
Upon the land they knewI
-
Men who have tilled the pastureD
The writhen thorn besideK
Women within grey vanished wallsL
Who bore and loved and diedK
-
And when the great town closesM
Upon me like a seaD
Daylong above its weary dinN
I hear them call to meD
-
Dead folk the roofs are round meD
To bar out field and hillO
And yet I hear you on the windP
Calling and calling stillO
-
And while by street and pavementQ
The day runs slowly throughI
My soul across these haunted downsR
Goes forth and walks with youI
