Beechwoods At Knole Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABC DEF GHI JKL LLL MND

How do I love you beech trees in the autumnA
Your stone grey columns a cathedral naveB
Processional above the earth's brown gloryC
-
I was a child and I loved the knurly tangleD
Of roots that coiled above a scarp like serpentsE
Where I might hide my treasure with the squirrelsF
-
I was a child and splashed my way in laughterG
Through drifts of leaves where underfoot the beech nutsH
Split with crisp crackle to my great rejoicingI
-
Red are the beechen slopes below Shock TavernJ
Red is the bracken on the sandy Furze fieldK
Red are the stags and hinds by Bo Pit MeadowsL
-
The rutting stags that nightly through the beechwoodsL
Bell out their challenge carrying their antlersL
Proudly beneath the antlered autumn branchesL
-
I was a child and heard the red deer's challengeM
Prowling and belling underneath my windowN
Never a cry so haughty or so mournfulD
