I woke to daylight and to findA
A wreath of fading vine leaves rough entwinedA
Lying as dropped in hasty flight upon my floorB
-
Dropped from thy head sweet Spirit of the nightC
Who cam'st with footstep lightC
Blown in by the soft breeze as thistledownD
In through my open doorB
Whence From the woodland from the fields of cornD
From flirting airily with the bright moonD
Playing throughout the hours that go too soonD
Ready to fly at the approach of mornD
Thou cam'stE
Bent on the curious questF
To see what mortal guestF
Dwelt in the one roomed cottage built to face the dawnD
-
Thou didst pauseG
Shy timid on the threshold though there laughedH
The mischief in thy roguish eyes then softI
Thou crosst the room on tiptoe to my bedJ
One finger on thy lipK
Cautious to make no slipK
I saw the wreath of vine leaves on thy headJ
-
Then with a twirlL
Thinking I sleptM
And a joyous whirlL
Into a dance leaptM
The careless spirit too long restrainedN
The purest dancingO
Feet sometimes chancingO
To touch the groundP
Then starting up with a fresh high boundP
To hang for a moment poised in the airQ
And a glimpse of white teeth glancingO
And a laughing face beneath tossing hairQ
An orgy a revel a living joyR
Embodied in one slim woodland boyR
Dancing forward backward now here now thereQ
Swaying to every impulse unconstrainedN
-
Thou wert too pure for Bacchus and too young for PanD
What wert thou In the daytime dost thou sleepS
In a caveT
Like a graveT
Till the moon calls thee in the sleep of manD
To thy light revels through the sombre deepS
Wood's shadows to a space among the treesU
Where the breezeU
Makes music through the branches for thy danceV
And the large eyed and silent deer stand roundP
Peeping through tree trunks and each forest soundP
The trickling stream'sV
Murmur in its dreamsV
The shepherd's pipe far echoing by chanceV
Melt all for theeW
To one soft harmonyW
While for the lighting of thy mossy slopeX
The moon thy lover sheds an opal glowY
Pale silver green the colour of the leavesV
Of olive treesV
The limelight on the stage for Youth and Joy and HopeX
And at the first rose menace of the dawnD
Must thou goY
Fly to thy cave thou little pagan FaunD
-
The fount of joy was bubbling in thine eyesV
Dancing was in thy feetE
And on thy lips a laugh that never diesV
Unutterably sweetE
Dance on for ever young for ever fairQ
Lightfooted as a frightened bounding deerZ
Thy wreath of vine leaves twisted in thy hairQ
Through all the changing seasons of the yearZ
And tread to Autumn's gorgeous hymn of praiseV
And to the happy Spring's light lilt of pleasureA2
And to the dirgeful chant of Winter's daysV
And ever varying ever suited measureA2
And in the Summer when the reeking earthB2
Swings a vast censer as it is most meetE
Praise thou for lavish gifts new hopes new birthB2
Praise with the dancing of thy tireless feetE
-
I woke to daylight and to findA
A wreath of fading vine leaves rough entwinedA
Lying as dropped in hasty flight upon my floorB
