Constantinople - Yanghin Var* Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCA DEFD GHHG AAAA IJJI AKKA A

As the baying of wolves from afarA
Borne on the wind from the Golden HornB
A cry in the distance long drawnC
Yanghin var yanghin varA
-
Suddenly waking the silent nightD
Suddenly breaking the sleeping calmE
The long far wailing alarmF
And the watch tower startles a warning lightD
-
As a torch passed from hand to handG
As a beacon springing from hill to hillH
The cry draws nearer though distant stillH
And the watch throws it on from stand to standG
-
And the voices rise as a tempest farA
As the swell of waves on a rocky shoreA
Each rumbles louder than beforeA
Yanghin var yanghin varA
-
And as the angel's unpausing feetI
The angel bearing the wrath of the LordJ
The angel bearing the flaming swordJ
The voice passes onward below in the streetI
-
Faintly it travels again from afarA
And as an echo of terror pastK
The wind from the Bosphorus bears the lastK
Yanghin varA
-
FireA
