Sara belle d'indolenceA
-
XIX AugustB
-
-
In a swinging hammock lyingC
Lightly flyingC
Zara lovely indolentD
O'er a fountain's crystal waveE
There to laveE
Her young beauty see her bentF
-
As she leans so sweet and softG
Flitting oftH
O'er the mirror to and froI
Seems that airy floating batJ
Like a featherK
From some sea gull's wing of snowI
-
Every time the frail boat ladenL
With the maidenL
Skims the water in its flightM
Starting from its trembling sheenN
Swift are seenN
A white foot and neck so whiteM
-
As that lithe foot's timid tipsA
Quick she dipsA
Passing in the rippling poolO
Blush oh snowiest ivoryP
Frolic sheP
Laughs to feel the pleasant coolO
-
Here displayed but half concealedQ
Half revealedQ
Each bright charm shall you beholdR
In her innocence emergingC
As a vergingC
On the wave her hands grow coldR
-
For no star howe'er divineS
Has the shineS
Of a maid's pure lovelinessA
Frightened if a leaf but quiversA
As she shiversA
Veiled with naught but dripping treesA
-
By the happy breezes fannedT
See her standT
Blushing like a living roseA
On her bosom swelling highU
If a flyU
Dare to seek a sweet reposeA
-
In those eyes which maiden prideV
Fain would hideV
Mark how passion's lightnings sleepW
And their glance is brighter farX
Than the starX
Brightest in heaven's bluest deepW
-
O'er her limbs the glittering currentD
In soft torrentD
Rains adown the gentle girlY
As if drop by drop should fallZ
One and allZ
From her necklace every pearlY
-
Lengthening still the reckless pleasureK
At her leisureK
Care free Zara ever slowI
As the hammock floats and swingsA
Smiles and singsA
To herself so sweet and lowI
-
Oh were I a capitanaS
Or sultanaS
Amber should be always mixtD
In my bath of jewelled stoneS
Near my throneS
Griffins twain of gold betwixtD
-
Then my hammock should be silkA2
White as milkA2
And more soft than down of doveB2
Velvet cushions where I sitD
Should emitD
Perfumes that inspire loveB2
-
Then should I no danger nearC2
Free from fearC2
Revel in my garden's streamD2
Nor amid the shadows deepW
Dread the peepW
Of two dark eyes' kindling gleamD2
-
He who thus would play the spyU
On the dieU
For such sight his head must throwI
In his blood the sabre nakedD
Would be slak dD
Of my slaves of ebon browE2
-
Then my rich robes trailing showI
As I goI
None to chide should be so boldD
And upon my sandals fineS
How should shineS
Rubies worked in cloth of goldD
-
Fancying herself a queenS
All unseenS
Thus vibrating in delightD
In her indolent coquettingI
Quite forgettingI
How the hours wing their flightD
-
As she lists the showery tinklingI
Of the sprinklingI
By her wanton curvets madeD
Never pauses she to thinkI
Of the brinkI
Where her wrapper white is laidD
-
To the harvest fields the whileF2
In long fileF2
Speed her sisters' lively bandD
Like a flock of birds in flightD
Streaming lightD
Dancing onward hand in handD
-
And they're singing every oneS
As they runS
This the burden of their layG2
Fie upon such idlenessA
Not to dressA
Earlier on harvest dayG2
