To My Daughter Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FGHG IJIJ KLKL MIMN DODO PQPQ RSTS UVUV

My child thou seest me content to leadA
A lonely life Do thou in imitationB
Not happy nor triumphant learn the needC
Of resignationB
-
All guileless be commercing with the skiesD
And as a sun to glorify the wholeE
My child within the azure of thine eyesD
Put thou thy soulE
-
For none are happy none triumphant hereF
To all their little span is incompleteG
Our life is but a shadow and my dearH
The shadows fleetG
-
Yes of their weary lot all men complainI
To happiness oh strange and cruel fateJ
All things are wanting all we seek in vainI
Or find too lateJ
-
What are the boons we crave each for his partK
The hope of which doth still our hearts beguileL
Renown and wealth a word a woman s heartK
A loving smileL
-
Mirth to the unloved king is wanting stillM
A drop of water to Sahara s plainI
Man s heart is like a well which as we fillM
But dries againN
-
Behold those thinkers whom we idolizeD
Those heroes whose command we gladly ownO
Whose names illuminate our somber skiesD
Where are they flownO
-
They rose like meteors through the wintry airP
And dazzled for a moment every eyeQ
Then sunk into the careless grave and thereP
In darkness lieQ
-
Kind Heaven that knows our bitter griefs and fearsR
Takes pity on our vain and empty daysS
And bathes each morning with refreshing tearsT
Our dusty waysS
-
One only law there is so just and mildU
Of which each honest heart must own the swayV
To pity nothing hate and oh my childU
To love alwayV
