Puisqu'ici bas tout meA

Since everything belowC

Its tone its fragrance or its glowC

Since all that lives and movesE
Upon the earth bestowsF
On what it seeks and what it lovesG
Its thorn or roseF
-
Since April to the treesH
Gives a bewitching soundI
And sombre night to grief gives easeH
And peace profoundI
-
Since day spring on the flowerJ
A fresh'ning drop confersK
And the fresh air on branch and bowerJ
Its choristersK
-
Since the dark wave bestowsK
A soft caress imprestI
On the green bank to which it goesK
Seeking its restI
-
I give thee at this hourJ
Thus fondly bent o'er theeA
The best of all the things in dow'rL
That in me beA
-
Receive poor gift 'tis trueM
Which grief not joy endearsK
My thoughts that like a shower of dewM
Reach thee in tearsK
-
My vows untold receiveN
All pure before thee laidI
Receive of all the days I liveO
The light or shadeI
-
My hours with rapture fill'dI
Which no suspicion wrongsK
And all the blandishments distill'dI
From all my songsK
-
My spirit whose essayK
Flies fearless wild and freeA
And hath and seeks to guide its wayK
No star but theeA
-
No pensive dreamy MuseK
Who though all else should smileP
Oft as thou weep'st with thee would chooseK
To weep the whileP
-
Oh sweetest mine this giftI
Receive 'tis throe aloneQ
My heart of which there's nothing leftI
When Love is goneR
