THE SISTERA
-
Why brother why upon me stareB
Why do your brows so fiercely lowerA
Your eyes like funeral torches glareB
Beneath their gloomy looks I cowerA
Why do I see your sashes rentC
Why have you thrice your fingers laidD
Upon the sheath What dire intentC
Makes you half draw the glittering bladeD
-
FIRST BROTHERA
-
Raised you today your veil and face displayedD
-
SISTERA
-
Home from the bath my path I tookE
Brothers Look not so terriblyF
And I was hidden from the lookE
Of every unbeliever's eyeG
But as the Mosque I hurried byG
Close covered in my palanquinH
Stifled beneath the mid day skyG
I loosed my veil to breathe betweenH
-
SECOND BROTHERA
-
Did not a man then pass in Cafton greenH
-
SISTERA
-
Ah yes perhaps it may be soI
But he ne'er saw my face My brothersJ
Together you are whispering lowI
What whisper you to one anotherA
You would not kill me On your soulK
He saw me not My oath believeL
Have mercy Your blind rage controlK
Your poor young sister O reprieveL
-
THIRD BROTHERA
-
Blood red I saw the sun sink down at eveL
-
SISTERA
-
Mercy O mercy Brothers ceaseM
Your daggers stab me to the heartN
Brothers I cling about your kneesO
O veil White veil The cause thou artN
Brothers Your dying sister propP
Tear not my bleeding hand awayQ
Darkness come o'er me with me stopP
The veil of death shuts out the dayQ
-
FOURTH BROTHERA
-
Unlifted by your hands this veil will stayQ
