How shall I note thee line of troubled years | C |
Which mark existence in our little span | D |
One constant twilight in the heaven appears | C |
One constant twilight in the mind of man | D |
- | |
Creed hope anticipation and despair | A |
Are but a mingling as of day and night | E |
The globe surrounded by deceptive air | A |
Is all enveloped in the same half light | E |
- | |
And voice is deadened by the evening breeze | F |
The shepherd's song or maiden's in her bower | A |
Mix with the rustling of the neighboring trees | F |
Within whose foliage is lulled the power | A |
- | |
Yet all unites The winding path that leads | G |
Thro' fields where verdure meets the trav'ller's eye | H |
The river's margin blurred with wavy reeds | G |
The muffled anthem echoing to the sky | H |
- | |
The ivy smothering the arm d tower | A |
The dying wind that mocks the pilot's ear | A |
The lordly equipage at midnight hour | A |
Draws into danger in a fog the peer | A |
- | |
The votaries of Satan or of Jove | I |
The wretched mendicant absorbed in woe | J |
The din of multitudes that onward move | I |
The voice of conscience in the heart below | J |
- | |
The waves which Thou O Lord alone canst still | K |
Th' elastic air the streamlet on its way | L |
And all that man projects or sovereigns will | K |
Or things inanimate might seem to say | L |
- | |
The strain of gondolier slow streaming by | H |
The lively barks that o'er the waters bound | M |
The trees that shake their foliage to the sky | H |
The wailing voice that fills the cots around | M |
- | |
And man who studies with an aching heart | N |
For now when smiles are rarely deemed sincere | A |
In vain the sceptic bids his doubts depart | N |
Those doubts at length will arguments appear | A |
- | |
Hence reader know the subject of my song | O |
A mystic age resembling twilight gloom | P |
Wherein we smile at birth or bear along | O |
With noiseless steps a victim to the tomb | P |
