Above all others everywhere I seeA
His image cold or burningB
My brain it thrills and many time sets freeA
The thoughts within me yearningB
My quivering lips pour forth the wordsC
That cluster in his name of gloryA
The star gigantic with its ray of swordsD
Whose gleams irradiate all modern storyA
-
I see his finger pointing where the shellE
Should fall to slay most rabbleF
And save foul regicides or strike the knellE
Of weaklings 'mid the tribunes' babbleF
A consul then o'er young but proudG
With midnight poring thinned and sallowF
But dreams of empire pierce the transient cloudG
And round pale face and lank locks form the haloF
-
And soon the Caesar with an eye a flameH
Whole nations' contact urgingB
To gain his soldiers gold and flameH
O Sun on high emergingB
Whose dazzling lustre fired the hellsD
Embosomed in grim bronze which free roseD
To change five hundred thousand base born TellsD
Into his host of half million heroesD
-
What next a captive Yea and caged apartI
No weight of arms enfoldedI
Can crush the turmoil in that seething heartI
Which Nature not her journeymen self mouldedI
Let sordid jailers vex their prizeD
But only bends that blow to lightningB
As gazing from the seaward rock his sighsD
Cleave through the storm and haste where France lay bright'ningB
-
Alone but greater True the sceptre's brokeJ
Yet lingers still some powerK
In tears of woe man's metal may revokeJ
In temper of high hourK
For baiting breath e'er list the kingsD
The pinion clipped may grow the eagleF
May burst in frantic thirst for home the ringsD
And rend the Bulldog Fox and Bear and BeagleF
-
And lastly grandest 'tween dark sea and hereL
Eternal brightness comingB
The eye so weary's freshened with a tearM
As rises distant drummingB
And wailing cheer they pass the paleF
His army mourns though still's the end hidI
And from his war stained cloak he answers 'HailF
And spurns the bed of gloom for throne aye splendidI
