Ecoute moi MadelineA
-
IX SeptemberB
-
-
List to me O MadelaineC
Now the snows have left the plainC
Which they warmly cloakedD
Come into the forest grovesE
Where the notes that Echo lovesF
Are from horns evokedD
-
Come where Springtide MadelaineC
Brings a sultry breath from SpainC
Giving buds their hueG
And last night to glad your eyeH
Laid the floral marquetryB
Red and gold and blueG
-
Would I were O MadelaineC
As the lamb whose wool you trainC
Through your tender handsI
Would I were the bird that whirlsI
Round and comes to peck your curlsI
Happy in such bandsI
-
Were I e'en O MadelaineC
Hermit whom the herd disdainC
In his pious cellJ
When your purest lips unfoldK
Sins which might to all be toldK
As to him you tellJ
-
Would I were O MadelaineC
Moth that murmurs 'gainst your paneC
Peering at your restL
As so like its woolly wingM
Ceasing scarce its flutteringM
Heaves and sinks your breastL
-
If you seek it MadelaineC
You may wish and not in vainC
For a serving hostN
And your splendid hall of stateO
Shall be envied by the greatO
O'er the Jew King's boastN
-
If you name it MadelaineC
Round your head no more you'll trainC
Simple margueritesI
No the coronet of peersI
Whom the queen herself oft fearsI
And the monarch greetsI
-
-
If you wish O MadelaineC
Where you gaze you long shall reignC
For I'm ruler hereB
I'm the lord who asks your handP
If you do not bid me standP
Loving shepherd hereB
