O France although you sleepA
We call you we the forbiddenB
The shadows have earsC
And the depths have criesD
-
Bitter glory less despotismE
Over a discouraged peopleF
Closes a black thick grateG
Of error and prejudiceH
-
It locks up the loyal swarmI
Of firm thinkers of heroesJ
But the Idea with the flap of a wingK
Will part the heavy barsL
-
And as in ninety oneB
Will retake sovereign flightM
For breaking apart a cage of bronzeN
Is easy for bronze birdO
-
Darkness covers the worldP
But the Idea illuminates and shinesQ
With its white brightness it floodsR
The dark blues of the nightM
-
It is the solitary lanternS
The providential rayT
It is the lamp of the earthU
That cannot help but light the skyV
-
It calms the suffering soulW
Guides life puts the dead to restX
It shows the mean the gulfY
It shows the just the wayT
-
In seeing in the dark mistZ
The Idea love of sad eyesD
Rise calm serene and pureA2
On the mysterious horizonB
-
Fanaticism and hatredB2
Roar before each threshholdB2
As obscene hounds howlC2
When appears the moon in mourningK
-
Oh Think of the mighty IdeaB2
Nations its superhuman browD2
Has upon it from now on the lightB2
That will show the way to tomorrowE2
