Imperial Revels Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDEFFE GHIHJJKLLM NMOMPP QQR STSTMMMMMM

Cheer courtiers round the splendid spreadA
The board that groans with shame and plateB
Still fawning to the sham crowned headA
That hopes its brass will turn its fateB
Drink till the comer last is fullC
And never hear in revels' lullD
Grim Vengeance forging arrows fleetE
Whilst I gnaw at the crustF
Of Exile in the dustF
But honour makes it sweetE
-
Ye cheaters in the trickster's fameG
Who dupe yourself and trickster chiefH
In blazing cafes spend the gainI
But draw the blind lest at his thiefH
Some fresh made beggar gives a glanceJ
And interrupts with steel the danceJ
But let him toilsomely tramp byK
As I myself afarL
Follow no gilded carL
In ways of honestyM
-
Ye troopers who shot mothers downN
And marshals whose brave cannonadeM
Broke infant arms and split the stoneO
Where slumbered age and guileless maidM
Though blood is the cup you fillP
Pretend it 'rosy' wine and stillP
Hail cannon 'king ' and steel the 'queen '-
But I prefer to supQ
From Philip Sidney's cupQ
True soldier's draught sereneR
-
O workmen seen by me sublimeS
When wrenched ye from the tyrant peaceT
Can you be dazed by tinselled crimeS
And find no foe beneath the fleeceT
Build places where fortunes feastM
And on your backs bear loads of beastM
Though once such masters you made fleeM
But then like me you ateM
Food of an endless feteM
The bread of LibertyM
