After The Battle Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIIJJ KK

MY father hero of benignant mienA
On horseback visited the gory sceneA
After the battle as the evening fellB
And took with him a trooper loved right wellB
Because of bravery and presence boldC
The field was covered with the dead all coldC
And shades of night were deepening came a soundD
Feeble and hoarse from something on the groundD
It was a Spaniard of the vanquished forceE
Who dragged himself with pain beside their courseE
Wounded and bleeding livid and half deadF
'Give me to drink in pity drink ' he saidF
My father touched stretched to his follower nowG
A flask of rum that from his saddle bowG
Hung down 'The poor soul give him drink ' said heH
But while the trooper prompt obedientlyH
Stooped towards the other he of Moorish raceI
Pointed a pistol at my father's faceI
And with a savage oath the trigger drewJ
The hat flew off a bullet passing throughJ
As swerved his charger in a backward strideK
'Give him to drink the same ' my father criedK
