Broad daylight with a sense of wearinessA
Mine eyes were closed but I was not asleepB
My hand was in my father's and I feltC
His presence near me Thus we often pastD
In silence hour by hour What was the needE
Of interchanging words when every thoughtF
That in our hearts arose was known to eachG
And every pulse kept time Suddenly there shoneH
A strange light and the scene as sudden changedI
I was awake It was an open plainJ
Illimitable stretching stretching oh so farK
And o'er it that strange light a glorious lightL
Like that the stars shed over fields of snowM
In a clear cloudless frosty winter nightL
Only intenser in its brilliance calmN
And in the midst of that vast plain I sawO
For I was wide awake it was no dreamP
A tree with spreading branches and with leavesQ
Of divers kinds dead silver and live goldR
Shimmering in radiance that no words may tellS
Beside the tree an Angel stood he pluckedT
A few small sprays and bound them round my headU
Oh the delicious touch of those strange leavesQ
No longer throbbed my brows no more I feltC
The fever in my limbs And oh I criedV
Bind too my father's forehead with these leavesQ
One leaf the Angel took and therewith touchedW
His forehead and then gently whispered NayX
Never oh never had I seen a faceY
More beautiful than that Angel's or more fullZ
Of holy pity and of love divineA2
Wondering I looked awhile then all at onceB2
Opened my tear dimmed eyes When lo the lightL
Was gone the light as of the stars when snowM
Lies deep upon the ground No more no moreC2
Was seen the Angel's face I only foundD2
My father watching patient by my bedU
And holding in his own close prest my handE2
