Part IA
-
Deep in the forest shades there dweltB
A Muni and his wifeC
Blind gray haired weak they hourly feltB
Their slender hold on lifeC
-
No friends had they no help or stayD
Except an only boyE
A bright eyed child his laughter gayD
Their leaf hut filled with joyE
-
Attentive duteous loving kindF
Thoughtful sedate and calmG
He waited on his parents blindF
Whose days were like a psalmH
-
He roamed the woods for luscious fruitsI
He brought them water pureJ
He cooked their simple mess of rootsI
Content to live obscureJ
-
To fretful questions answers mildK
He meekly ever gaveL
If they reproved he only smiledK
He loved to be their slaveL
-
Not that to him they were austereM
But age is peevish stillN
Dear to their hearts he was so dearM
That none his place might fillN
-
They called him Sindhu and his nameO
Was ever on their tongueP
And he nor cared for wealth nor fameO
Who dwelt his own amongP
-
A belt of Bela trees hemmed roundQ
The cottage small and rudeR
If peace on earth was ever foundQ
'Twas in that solitudeR
-
-
Part IIA
-
Great Dasarath the King of OudeR
Whom all men love and fearM
With elephants and horses proudR
Went forth to hunt the deerM
-
Oh gallant was the long arrayD
Pennons and plumes were seenS
And swords that mirrored back the dayD
And spears and axes keenS
-
Rang trump and conch and piercing fifeC
Woke Echo from her bedR
The solemn woods with sounds were rifeC
As on the pageant spedR
-
Hundreds nay thousands on they wentR
The wild beasts fled awayD
Deer ran in herds and wild boars spentR
Became an easy preyD
-
Whirring the peacocks from the brakeT
With Argus wings aroseU
Wild swans abandoned pool and lakeT
For climes beyond the snowsU
-
From tree to tree the monkeys sprungP
Unharmed and unpursuedR
As louder still the trumpets rungP
And startled all the woodR
-
The porcupines and such small gameO
Unnoted fled at willN
The weasel only caught to tameO
From fissures in the hillN
-
Slunk light the tiger from the bankV
But sudden turned to bayD
When he beheld the serried rankV
That barred his tangled wayD
-
Uprooting fig trees on their pathW
And trampling shrubs and flowersX
Wild elephants in fear and wrathW
Burst through like moving towersX
-
Lowering their horns in crescents grimY
Whene'er they turned aboutR
Retreated into coverts dimY
The bisons' fiercer routR
-
And in this mimic game of warZ
In bands dispersed and pastR
The royal train some near some farA2
As day closed in at lastR
-
Where was the king He left his friendsB2
At midday it was knownC2
And now that evening fast descendsB2
Where was he All aloneC2
-
Curving the river formed a lakeT
Upon whose bank he stoodR
No noise the silence there to breakT
Or mar the solitudeR
-
Upon the glassy surface fellD2
The last beams of the dayD
Like fiery darts that lengthening swellD2
As breezes wake and playD
-
Osiers and willows on the edgeE2
And purple buds and redR
Leant down and 'mid the pale green sedgeE2
The lotus raised its headR
-
And softly softly hour by hourF2
Light faded and a veilG2
Fell over tree and wave and flowerF2
On came the twilight paleG2
-
Deeper and deeper grew the shadesH2
Stars glimmered in the skyA
The nightingale along the gladesH2
Raised her preluding cryA
-
What is that momentary flashI2
A gleam of silver scalesJ2
Reveals the Mahseer then a splashI2
And calm again prevailsJ2
-
As darkness settled like a pallK2
The eye would pierce in vainL2
The fireflies gemmed the bushes allM2
Like fiery drops of rainL2
-
Pleased with the scene and knowing notR
Which way alas to goN2
The monarch lingered on the spotR
The lake spread bright belowN2
-
He lingered when oh hark oh harkO2
What sound salutes his earP2
A roebuck drinking in the darkO2
Not hunted nor in fearM
-
Straight to the stretch his bow he drewQ2
That bow ne'er missed its aimO
Whizzing the deadly arrow flewQ2
Ear guided on the gameO
-
Ah me What means this Hark a cryA
A feeble human wailG2
Oh God it said I die I dieA
Who'll carry home the pailG2
-
Startled the monarch forward ranR2
And then there met his viewQ2
A sight to freeze in any manR2
The warm blood coursing trueQ2
-
A child lay dying on the grassS2
A pitcher by his sideR
Poor Sindhu was the child alasS2
His parents' stay and prideR
-
His bow and quiver down to flingT2
And lift the wounded boyE
A moment's work was with the kingT2
Not dead that was a joyE
-
He placed the child's head on his lapU2
And ranged the blinding hairV2
The blood welled fearful from the gapU2
On neck and bosom fairV2
-
He dashed cold water on the faceW2
He chafed the hands with sighsX2
Till sense revived and he could traceW2
Expression in the eyesX2
-
Then mingled with his pity fearM
In all this universeY2
What is so dreadful as to hearP2
A Bramin's dying curseY2
-
So thought the king and on his browZ2
The beads of anguish spreadR
And Sindhu fully conscious nowZ2
The anguish plainly readR
-
What dost thou fear O mighty kingT2
For sure a king thou artR
Why should thy bosom anguish wringT2
No crime was in thine heartR
-
Unwittingly the deed was doneA3
It is my destinyB3
O fear not thou but pity oneA3
Whose fate is thus to dieA
-
No curses no I bear no grudgeC3
Not thou my blood hast spiltR
Lo here before the unseen JudgeC3
Thee I absolve from guiltR
-
The iron red hot as it burnsD3
Burns those that touch it tooQ2
Not such my nature for it spurnsD3
Thank God the like to doQ2
-
Because I suffer should I giveE3
Thee king a needless painL2
Ah no I die but mayst thou liveF3
And cleansed from every stainL2
-
Struck with these words and doubly grievedR
At what his hands had doneA3
The monarch wept as weeps bereavedR
A man his only sonA3
-
Nay weep not so resumed the childR
But rather let me sayD
My own sad story sin defiledR
And why I die to dayR
-
Picking a living in our sheavesG3
And happy in their lovesH3
Near 'mid a peepul's quivering leavesG3
There lived a pair of dovesH3
-
Never were they two separateR
And lo in idle moodR
I took a sling and ball elateR
In wicked sport and rudeR
-
And killed one bird it was the maleG2
Oh cruel deed and baseW2
The female gave a plaintive wailG2
And looked me in the faceW2
-
The wail and sad reproachful lookI3
-
In plain words seemed to sayR
A widowed life I cannot brookI3
The forfeit thou must payR
-
What was my darling's crime that thouZ2
Him wantonly shouldst killN
The curse of blood is on thee nowZ2
Blood calls for red blood stillN
-
And so I die a bloody deathJ3
But not for this I mournK3
To feel the world pass with my breathJ3
I gladly could have borneK3
-
But for my parents who are blindR
And have no other stayR
This this weighs sore upon my mindR
And fills me with dismayR
-
Upon the eleventh day of the moonL3
They keep a rigorous fastR
All yesterday they fasted soonL3
For water and repastR
-
They shall upon me feebly callM2
Ah must they call in vainL2
Bear thou the pitcher friend 'tis allM2
I ask down that steep laneL2
-
He pointed ceased then sudden diedR
The king took up the corpseM3
And with the pitcher slowly hiedR
Attended by RemorseN3
-
Down the steep lane unto the hutR
Girt round with Bela treesO3
Gleamed far a light the door not shutR
Was open to the breezeO3
-
-
Part IIIA
-
Oh why does not our child returnP3
Too long he surely staysQ3
Thus to the Muni blind and sternP3
His partner gently saysR3
-
For fruits and water when he goesU
He never stays so longS3
Oh can it be beset by foesU
He suffers cruel wrongS3
-
Some distance he has gone I fearM
A more circuitous roundR
Yet why should he The fruits are nearM
The river near our boundR
-
I die of thirst it matters notR
If Sindhu be but safeT3
What if he leave us and this spotR
Poor birds in cages chafeT3
-
Peevish and fretful oft we areA2
Ah no that cannot beB3
Of our blind eyes he is the starA2
Without him what were weB3
-
Too much he loves us to forsakeT
But something ominousU3
Here in my heart a dreadful acheT
Says he is gone from usU3
-
Why do my bowels for him yearnP3
What ill has crossed his pathW
Blind helpless whither shall we turnP3
Or how avert the wrathW
-
Lord of my soul what means my painL2
This horrid terror likeV3
Some cloud that hides a hurricaneL2
Hang not O lightning strikeV3
-
Thus while she spake the king drew nearM
With haggard look and wildR
Weighed down with grief and pale with fearM
Bearing the lifeless childR
-
Rustled the dry leaves neath his footR
And made an eerie soundR
A neighbouring owl began to hootR
All else was still aroundR
-
At the first rustle of the leavesG3
The Muni answered clearM
Lo here he is oh wherefore grievesG3
Thy soul my partner dearM
-
The words distinct the monarch heardR
He could no further goN2
His nature to its depths was stirredR
He stopped in speechless woeN2
-
No steps advanced the sudden pauseW3
Attention quickly drewQ2
Rolled sightless orbs to learn the causeX3
But hark the steps renewQ2
-
Where art thou darling why so longS3
Hast thou delayed to nightR
We die of thirst we are not strongS3
This fasting kills outrightR
-
Speak to us dear one only speakY3
And calm our idle fearsZ3
Where hast thou been and what to seekY3
Have pity on these tearsA4
-
With head bent low the monarch heardR
Then came a cruel throbB4
That tore his heart still not a wordR
Only a stifled sobB4
-
It is not Sindhu who art thouZ2
And where is Sindhu goneC4
There's blood upon thy hands avowZ2
There is Speak on speak onD4
-
The dead child in their arms he placedR
And briefly told his taleG2
The parents their dead child embracedR
And kissed his forehead paleG2
-
Our hearts are broken Come dear wifeC
On earth no more we dwellD2
Now welcome Death and farewell LifeC
And thou O king farewellD2
-
We do not curse thee God forbidR
But to my inner eyeA
The future is no longer hidR
Thou too shalt like us dieA
-
Die for a son's untimely lossE4
Die with a broken heartR
Now help us to our bed of mossE4
And let us both departR
-
Upon the moss he laid them downF4
And watched beside the bedR
Death gently came and placed a crownF4
Upon each reverend headR
-
Where the Sarayu's waves dash freeB3
Against a rocky bankV
The monarch had the corpses threeB3
Conveyed by men of rankV
-
There honoured he with royal pompG4
Their funeral obsequiesE4
Incense and sandal drum and trompG4
And solemn sacrificeE4
-
What is the sequel of the taleG2
How died the king Oh manR2
A prophet's words can never failG2
Go read the RamayanR2
