A terror both of gods and menA
Was Heerun Kasyapu the kingB
No bear more sullen in its denA
No tiger quicker at the springB
In strength of limb he had not metC
Since first his black flag he unfurledD
Nor in audacious courage yetC
His equal in the wide wide worldD
-
The holy Veds he tore in shredsE
Libations sacrifices ritesF
He made all penal and the headsE
Of Bramins slain he flung to kitesF
I hold the sceptre in my handG
I sit upon the ivory throneH
Bow down to me 'tis my commandG
And worship me and me aloneH
-
No god has ever me withstoodI
Why raise ye altars cease your painsJ
I shall protect you give you foodK
If ye obey or else the chainsJ
Fled at such edicts self exiledL
The Bramins and the pundits wiseM
To live thenceforth in forests wildL
Or caves in hills that touch the skiesM
-
In secret there they altars raisedN
And made oblations due by fireO
Their gods their wonted gods they praisedN
Lest these should earth destroy in ireP
They read the Veds they prayed and musedQ
Full well they knew that Time would bringB
For favours scorned and gifts misusedQ
Undreamt of changes on his wingB
-
Time changes deserts bare to meadsR
And fertile meads to deserts bareS
Cities to pools and pools with reedsR
To towns and cities large and fairS
Time changes purple into ragsT
And rags to purple Chime by chimeU
Whether it flies or runs or dragsT
The wise wait patiently on TimeU
-
Time brought the tyrant children fourV
Rahd Onoorahd Prehlad SunghradQ
Who made his castle gray and hoarV
Once full of gloom with sunshine gladQ
No boys were e'er more beautifulW
No brothers e'er loved more each otherO
No sons were e'er more dutifulW
Nor ever kissed a fonder motherO
-
Nor less beloved were they of himX
Who gave them birth Kasyapu proudQ
But made by nature stern and grimX
His love was covered by a cloudQ
From which it rarely e'er emergedQ
To gladden these sweet human flowersY
They grew apace and now Time urgedQ
The education of their powersY
-
Who should their teacher be A manZ
Among the flatterers in the courtQ
Was found well suited to the planZ
The tyrant had devised ReportQ
Gave him a wisdom owned by fewA2
And certainly to trim his sailB2
And veer his bark none better knewA2
Before a changing adverse galeB2
-
And Sonda Marco such his nameC2
Took home the four fair boys to teachD2
All knowledge that their years becameC2
Science and war and modes of speechD2
But he was told if death he fearedQ
Never to tell them of the soulE2
Of vows and prayers and rites reveredQ
And of the gods who all controlE2
-
The sciences the boys were taughtQ
They mastered with a quickness strangeF2
But Prehlad was the one for thoughtQ
He soared above the lesson's rangeF2
One day the tutor unseen heardQ
The boy discuss forbidden themesG2
As if his inmost heart were stirredQ
And he of truth from heaven had gleamsG2
-
O Prince what mean'st thou In his frightQ
The teacher thus in private saidQ
Talk on such subjects is not rightQ
Wouldst thou bring ruin on my headQ
There are no gods except the kingB
The ruler of the world is heH2
Look up to him and do not bringB
Destruction by a speech too freeH2
-
Be wary for thy own sake childQ
If he should hear thee talking soI2
Thou shalt for ever be exiledQ
And I shall die full well I knowI2
Worthy of worship honour praiseJ2
Is thy great father Things unseenK2
What are they Themes of poets' laysJ2
They are not and have never beenL2
-
Smiling the boy with folded handsM2
As sign of a submission meekN2
Answered his tutor Thy commandsM2
Are ever precious Do not seekN2
To lay upon me what I feelO2
Would be unrighteous Let me hearP2
Those inner voices that revealO2
Long vistas in another sphereQ2
-
The gods that rule the earth and seaH2
Shall I abjure them and adoreV
A man It may not may not beH2
Though I should lie in pools of goreV
My conscience I would hurt no moreV
But I shall follow what my heartQ
Tells me is right so I imploreV
My purpose fixed no longer thwartQ
-
The coward calls black white white blackR2
At bidding or in fear of deathS2
Such suppleness thank God I lackR2
To die is but to lose my breathS2
Is death annihilation NoI2
New worlds will open on my viewA2
When persecuted hence I goI2
The right is right the true is trueA2
-
All's over now the teacher thoughtQ
Now let this reach the monarch's earP2
And instant death shall be my lotQ
They parted he in abject fearQ2
And soon he heard a choral songT2
Sung by young voices in the praiseJ2
Of gods unseen who right all wrongT2
And rule the worlds from primal daysJ2
-
What progress have thy charges madeQ
Let them be called that I may seeH2
And Sonda Marco brought as badeQ
His pupils to the royal kneeH2
Three passed the monarch's test severeQ2
The fourth remained then spake the kingB
Now Prehlad with attention hearP2
I know thou hast the strongest wingB
-
What is the cream of knowledge childQ
Which men take such great pains to learnU2
With folded hands he answered mildQ
Listen O Sire To speak I yearnU2
All sciences are nothing worthV2
Astronomy that tracks the starW2
Geography that maps the earthV2
Logic and Politics and WarV
-
And Medicine that strives to healO2
But only aggravates diseaseX2
All all are futile so I feelO2
For me O father none of theseX2
That is true knowledge which can showI2
The glory of the living godsY2
Divest of pride make men belowI2
Humble and happy though but clodsY2
-
That is true knowledge which can makeZ2
Us mortals saintlike holy pureA3
The strange thirst of the spirit slakeZ2
And strengthen suffering to endureA3
That is true knowledge which can changeF2
Our very natures with its glowI2
The sciences whate'er their rangeF2
Feed but the flesh and make a showI2
-
Where hast thou learnt this nonsense boyB3
Where live these gods believed so greatQ
Can they like me thy life destroyB3
Have they such troops and royal stateQ
Above all gods is he who rulesY2
The wide wide earth from sea to seaY2
Men devils gods yea all but foolsY2
Bow down in fear and worship meY2
-
And dares an atom from my loinsY2
Against my kingly power rebelW
Though heaven itself to aid him joinsY2
His end is death the infidelC3
I warn thee yet bow down thou slaveD3
And worship me or thou shalt dieQ
We'll see what gods descend to saveD3
What gods with me their strength will tryQ
-
Thus spake the monarch in his ireP
One hand outstretched in menace rudeQ
And eyes like blazing coals of fireO
And Prehlad in unruffled moodQ
Straight answered him his head bent lowI2
His palms joined meekly on his breastQ
As ever and his cheeks aglowI2
His rock firm purpose to attestQ
-
Let not my words Sire give offenceY2
To thee and to my mother bothE3
I give as due all reverenceY2
And to obey thee am not lothF3
But higher duties sometimes clashG3
With lower then these last must goI2
Or there will come a fearful crashG3
In lamentation fear and woeI2
-
The gods who made us are the lifeH3
Of living creatures small and greatQ
We see them not but space is rifeH3
With their bright presence and their stateQ
They are the parents of us allI3
'Tis they create sustain redeemJ3
Heaven earth and hell they hold in thrallI3
And shall we these high gods blasphemeJ3
-
Blest is the man whose heart obeysY2
And makes their law of life his guideQ
He shall be led in all his waysY2
His footsteps shall not ever slideQ
In forests dim on raging seasY2
In certain peace shall he abideQ
What though he all the world displeaseY2
His gods shall all his wants provideQ
-
Cease babbler 'tis enough I knowI2
Thy proud rebellious nature wellC3
Ho Captain of our lifeguards hoI2
Take down this lad to dungeon cellC3
And bid the executioner waitQ
Our orders All unmoved and calmJ3
He went as reckless of his fateQ
Erect and stately as a palmJ3
-
Hushed was the hall as down he pastQ
No breath no whisper not a signK3
Through ranks of courtiers all aghastQ
Like beaten hounds that dare not whineK3
Outside the door the Captain spokeZ2
Recant he said beneath his breathS2
The lion's anger to provokeZ2
Is death O prince is certain deathS2
-
Thanks said the prince I have revolvedQ
The question in my mind with careS
Do what you will I am resolvedQ
To do the right all deaths I dareS
The gods perhaps may please to spareS
My tender years if not why stillL3
I never shall my faith forswearS
I can but say be done their willL3
-
Whether in pity for the youthM3
The headsman would not rightly plyQ
The weapon or the gods in truthM3
Had ordered that he should not dieQ
Soon to the king there came reportQ
The sword would not destroy his sonN3
The council held thereon was shortQ
The king's look frightened every oneN3
-
There is a spell against cold steelO2
Which known the steel can work no harmJ3
Some sycophant with baneful zealO2
Hath taught this foolish boy the charmJ3
It would be wise O king to dealO2
Some other way or else I fearQ2
Much damage to the common wealO2
Thus spake the wily tongued vizierQ2
-
Dark frowned the king Enough of thisY2
Death instant death is my commandQ
Go throw him down some precipiceY2
Or bury him alive in sandQ
With terror dumb from that wide hallO2
Departed all the courtier bandQ
But not one man amongst them allO2
Dared raise against the prince his handQ
-
And now vague rumours ran aroundQ
Men talked of them with bated breathS2
The river has a depth profoundQ
The elephants trample down to deathS2
The poisons kill the firebrands burnU2
Had every means in turn been triedQ
Some said they had but soon they learnU2
The brave young prince had not yet diedQ
-
For once more in the Council HallO2
He had been cited to appearQ2
'Twas open to the public allO2
And all the people came in fearQ2
Banners were hung along the wallO2
The King sat on his peacock throneH
And now the hoary MarechalO2
Brings in the youth bare skin and boneH
-
Who shall protect thee Prehlad nowO3
Against steel poison water fireQ2
Thou art protected men avowO3
Who treason if but bold admireQ2
In our own presence thou art broughtQ
That we and all may know the truthM3
Where are thy gods I long have soughtQ
But never found them hapless youthM3
-
Will they come down to prove their strengthP3
Will they come down to rescue theeY2
Let them come down for once at lengthP3
Come one or all to fight with meY2
Where are thy gods Or are they deadQ
Or do they hide in craven fearQ2
There lies my gage None ever saidQ
I hide from any far or nearQ2
-
My gracious Liege my Sire my KingZ2
If thou indeed wouldst deign to hearQ2
In humble mood my words would springZ2
Like a pellucid fountain clearQ2
For I have in my dungeon darkZ2
Learnt more of truth than e'er I knewA2
There is one God One only markZ2
To Him is all our service dueA2
-
Hath He a shape or hath He noneN3
I know not this nor care to knowI2
Dwelling in light to which the sunN3
Is darkness He sees all belowI2
Himself unseen In Him I trustQ
He can protect me if He willO2
And if this body turn to dustQ
He can new life again instilO2
-
I fear not fire I fear not swordQ
All dangers father I can dareQ2
Alone I can confront a hordeQ
For oh my God is everywhereQ2
What everywhere Then in this hallO2
And in this crystal pillar brightQ
Now tell me plain before us allO2
Is He herein thy God of lightQ
-
The monarch placed his steel gloved handQ
Upon a crystal pillar nearQ2
In mockful jest was his demandQ
The answer came low serious clearQ2
Yes father God is even hereQ2
And if He choose this very hourQ2
Can strike us dead with ghastly fearQ2
And vindicate His name and powerQ2
-
Where is this God Now let us seeY2
He spumed the pillar with his footQ
Down down it tumbled like a treeY2
Severed by axes from the rootQ
And from within with horrid clangZ2
That froze the blood in every veinQ3
A stately sable warrior sprangZ2
Like some phantasma of the brainQ3
-
He had a lion head and eyesY2
A human body feet and handsY2
Colossal such strange shapes ariseY2
In clouds when Autumn rules the landsY2
He gave a shout the boldest quailedQ
Then struck the tyrant on the helmJ3
And ripped him down and last he hailedQ
Prehlad as king of all the realmJ3
-
A thunder clap the shape was goneR3
One king lay stiff and stark and deadQ
Another on the peacock throneH
Bowed reverently his youthful headQ
Loud rang the trumpets louder stillO2
A sovereign people's wild acclaimJ3
The echoes ran from hill to hillO2
Kings rule for us and in our nameJ3
-
Tyrants of every age and climeJ3
Remember this that awful shapeS3
Shall startle you when comes the timeJ3
And send its voice from cape to capeS3
As human peoples suffer painQ3
But oh the lion strength is theirsY2
Woe to the king when galls the chainQ3
Woe woe their fury when he daresY2
