Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHIH JKJKKLKL

Wavered the foremost soldiers then fell backA
Fallen was their leader and loomed right beforeB
The sullen Prussian cannon grim and blackA
With lighted matches waving Now once moreB
Patriots and veterans Ah 'Tis in vainC
Back they recoil though bravest of the braveD
No human troops may stand that murderous rainC
But who is this that rushes to a graveD
-
It is a woman slender tall and brownE
She snatches up the standard as it fallsF
In her hot haste tumbles her dark hair downE
And to the drummer boy aloud she callsF
To beat the charge then forwards on the pontG
They dash together who could bear to seeH
A woman and a child thus Death confrontI
Nor burn to follow them to victoryH
-
I read the story and my heart beats fastJ
Well might all Europe quail before thee FranceK
Battling against oppression Years have pastJ
Yet of that time men speak with moistened glanceK
Va nu pieds When rose high your MarseillaiseK
Man knew his rights to earth's remotest boundL
And tyrants trembled Yours alone the praiseK
Ah had a Washington but then been foundL
