Twas on a common street she livedA
Her mothers eye the occasional glanceB
While playing on skates with other kidsC
Sometimes on wheels she d try to danceB
But rising early she d always sayD
The bestest news that I can hearE
There is no school todayD
-
Until one night this shadow appearedF
To cross the loveliest face of allG
With tears in her eyes her mother fearedF
No more she d hear her angel callG
Those same few words she d always sayD
The bestest news that I can hearE
There is no school todayD
-
Tis in the early morning the church bell it did ringH
As school kids gather round to fiddle and to prateD
The choir sets up for there s hymns to singH
As the hearse stands still beside the church gateD
While a thousand penny candles sayD
The bestest news that I can hearE
There is no school todayD
-
Twas on a common street she livedD
Yet still her mothers eye that occasional glance she d giveI
Roller skates abandoned no longer do they danceB
Those kids are all grown up now with boyfriends and romanceB
But still her mother hears her angle daughter sayD
The bestest news that you can hear I m back at school todayD
