| Just twenty eight would start the call | A |
| With canvas hat they marched in file | B |
| No fear they ll show beneath broad smile | B |
| For this a war ne er seen before | C |
| No words or dreams can warn young men | D |
| Just what this war shall hold in store | C |
| So many boys in bib n brace so many tears their mothers face | E |

| Their numbers increase as they march on | F |
| Through Clifton Toowoomba and Grantham town | G |
| With more to join their ragged band | H |
| Their fearless dreams shall never wane | I |
| They march through Laidley s clapping hands | J |
| Then into Ipswich and Brisbane s grand | H |
| But this war was soon to take them | K |
| These young boys with dreams in their eyes | L |
| And volunteering men | D |

| In sickening death their dreams pass by | M |
| Their friends and neighbors and brothers all | A |
| In fields they died having answered the call | A |
| What has happened to those dreams | N |
| Beneath that warm November sky | M |
| My God has forsaken these boys it seems | N |
| Some so young they couldn t vote | O |
| But I wonder were their words in that letter | P |
| One brave dying soldier wrote | O |

| May God forgive me fo I have taken | Q |
| Some grieving mothers son | Q |
| While leaving her to wonder | P |
| If my soul s now blackened for what I ve done | Q |
| I pray this burning pain from bullet that I feel | R |
| Is God s forgiveness while in this trench I kneel | R |
| With dreams now scattered she should not wonder | P |
| For soon tis I shall meet her son | Q |
| For soon my life will be no longer | P |
| And all our dreams be gone | S |
