No longer Beauty's many colour'd robeA
Adorns the autumnal scene no longer playB
The Zephyrs with her tresses she has fledC
To happier regions and has left the yearD
Naked and void of charms the leafless woodsE
Tremble no more with rapture at the voiceF
Of harmony ah how is Nature changedG
Silent and sad she anxiously awaitsH
Thy coming mighty King and as the sunI
Less bright less ardent more and more declinesJ
Towards the horizon with alarm she marksK
Thy shadow lengthening in the nightly shadeL
And towering o'er her prostrate as she liesM
More threatening more gigantic till at lengthN
Boreas thy harbinger forth rushing fierceO
Tears from chill'd Autumn's head the withering CrownP
And blustering loud in her affrighted earQ
O Winter tells thy terrible approachR
-
Behold in awful majesty thou comestL
On huge black clouds that through the encumber'd skyS
Before the northern blast sail slowly onT
Thou ridest sublime aloft in ether towersU
Thy giant form thy formidable frownP
Blackens the night thy threatening voice sent forthV
Upon the impetuous winds affrights the worldL
Yet dare I welcome thee terrific PowerW
Dread Winter hail thy terrors fill my soulX
With a delightful awe I love to traceY
Thy varying scenes the wonders of thy reignZ
Thy Ministers await thy sovereign willA2
And in the secret regions of the airB2
In cloudy magazines prepare thy storesC2
Of snow and rain and hail At thy commandL
Frost that invisible mysterious PowerW
Breathes upon Nature and thou see'st her soonD2
An unresisting captive bound in iceE2
Vainly she mourns till at thy bidding ThawF2
With his damp misty standard from the southG2
Comes creeping silently and sets her freeH2
She weeps for joy Ah now thou dost unchainD2
The Demon of the tempest to exertL
On tortured Nature thy tyrannic mightL
Fierce on the whirlwind's wing he rushes forthV
With dreadful bellowings hurling all aroundL
Destructive deluges of rain snow hailI2
In wildest discord and chaotic warJ2
Mingling earth sea and sky All potent LordL
Dread Winter though Sublimity appearsK2
Thy chief attendant and partakes thy throneD2
Yet Beauty often visits thee and daresL2
In many a scene with the more powerful charmsM2
Of her majestic sister to combineD2
Her pleasing graces I delight to viewN2
Thy snowy robe of purest glowing whiteL
The clear blue skies the cheerful evergreenD2
Amid the wintry desert from whose boughsO2
The little redbreast chirps the trees and herbsP2
With snow and hoarfrost fringed to fancy's eyeS
Presenting pictured shapes and when the sunD2
Sheds o'er them his effulgence sparkling keenD2
With million living particles of lightL
-
But with far nobler transport I surveyB
Thy nightly scene O Winter when by frostL
Refined and clear'd the pure transpicuous airB2
Through her thin azure veil to wondering manD2
Displays the unclouded heavens myriads of starsQ2
Shining in all their glory at the viewN2
Rapt Contemplation in her car of lightL
Expatiates in the interminable spaceY
Ranging from world to world from sun to sunD2
O'erwhelm'd with wonder and astonishmentL
And sacred awe till lifting up her eyesM
She sees Religion from the opening gateL
Of heaven itself on her seraphic wingsR2
Smiling descend she feels her power divineD2
And raptured hymns the great Creator's praiseS2
