Fairest and loveliest of the sun born trainA
That o'er the varying year alternate reignA
Whose eye soft beaming with thy father's fireB
Fond Nature woos with ever fresh desireB
Enchanting Spring O let thy votary's layC
Invite thy angel smile thy genial swayC
-
Still do thy beauties to my partial heartD
Whene'er I gaze superior joys impartD
When winter's cloudy veil thou draw'st awayC
And vested with the sun's mild dewy rayC
First to the longing earth thy charms thou dost displayC
Or when Aurora to the lark's gay songE
Full of thy spirit lightly trips alongE
With joyful kisses greets the first born flowersF
And o'er them breathes thy warm refreshing showersF
Or when on shadowy pillow in the westG
Fann'd by thy gentlest Zephyrs into restG
Eve sweetly dozes whilst as in a dreamH
She sees the glimmerings of the solar beamH
O'er the dim landscape languishingly strayC
On ocean's smiling face reflected playC
Fade in the purple ether's darkening huesI
And vernal peace and joy o'er earth diffuseJ
-
More grateful strains O Spring thy favours claimK
Shine on thy beauties and endear thy nameK
While Winter's winds thy new born charms defaceL
And the young Year starves in his cold embraceL
The Hours by stealth advancing bear awayC
And on thy lap with smiles of pleasure layC
The shivering Babe new vigour there he gainsM
And spreads thy various treasures o'er the plainsM
-
The joyous Naiades from their icy bandsN
Unfetter'd dance and warble o'er the landsN
The Dryads feel thy genial breath and raiseO
Their heads new crown'd with leaves and whisper praiseO
The plumy warblers wake their amorous strainsM
The herds and flocks sport o'er the fresh green plainsM
Fancy and Hope return the mind to blessP
A paradise she sees and dreams of happinessQ
-
Come then indulgent Ruler of the yearR
Sweet Spring to grateful Nature ever dearR
From the blest regions of Elysian dayC
Climes favour'd high with thy perennial swayC
O deign to come and let our raptured eyesS
View thee as through a veil in these obscurer skiesS
-
Methinks I see thee coming from afarT
Thy beauty decks Apollo's mounting carT
The tyrant of the north with dazzled sightU
Beholds and yielding meditates his flightU
His dread petrific rod he long has brokeV
And freed glad Nature from his icy yokeV
She lifts her head and hails the approaching hourB
When she shall feel thy more propitious powerB
-
O haste thy progress and exert thy swayC
In all thy charms on some thrice hallow'd dayC
When the soft whispering air to Fancy's earsW
Wafts the celestial music of the spheresW
While Pleasures Loves and Graces round thee flyX
Glide on a sun beam down the clear blue skyX
Crown'd with a myrtle wreath begin thy reignA
Bid lingering Winter fly with all his trainA
Pour forth thy favours o'er this western isleY
And let each grateful eye reflect thy smileY
