Epitaph On Napoleon Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GAGA HIH

Lo here on this lone isle amid the deepsA
From his proud height of conquest greatness hurl'dB
Buried in silent night Napoleon sleepsA
Long Gallia's boast the wonder of the worldB
-
Though humbly born Ambition claim'd her childC
Fate urged him on his great career to fillD
On him in war in dangers Fortune smiledC
And on his eagles Victory waited stillD
-
By battles won by policy profoundE
Kings he dethroned fill'd Europe with dismayF
England alone of all the nations roundE
His power opposed disdaining to obeyF
-
Forced by the flames of Moscow to retreatG
Half his vast host by cold by famine diesA
Famed Waterloo beheld his last defeatG
There sunk his glory's sun ne'er more to riseA
-
Briton from this sad spot ere thou departH
Pause while his shade complains in Fancy's earI
'Had generous feeling warm'd thy Sovereign's heartH
Though Briton's foe I had not perish'd here '-
