Anacreontic Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBAAAA CCDDAAE FFGDGDAAHHIIJJKKLALA AA

Let us my Friends our mirth forbearA
While yonder Censor mounts the chairA
His form erect his stately paceB
His huge white wig his solemn faceB
His scowling brows his ken severeA
His haughty pleasure chiding sneerA
Some high Philosopher declareA
Hush let us hear him from the chairA
-
'Ye giddy youths I hate your mirthC
How ill beseeming sons of earthC
Know ye not well the fate of manD
That death is certain life a spanD
That merriment soon sinks in sorrowA
Sunshine to day and clouds to morrowA
Hearken then fools to Reason's voiceE
That bids ye mourn and not rejoice '-
-
Such gloomy thoughts grave Sage are thineF
Now gentle Friends attend to mineF
Since mortals must dieG
Since life's but a spanD
'Tis wisdom say IG
To live while we canD
And fill up with pleasureA
The poor little measureA
Of fate to complainH
How simple and vainH
Long faces I hateI
They shorten the dateI
My Friends while ye mayJ
Be jovial to dayJ
The things that will beK
Ne'er wish to foreseeK
Or should ye employL
Your thoughts on to morrowA
Let Hope sing of joyL
Not Fear croak of sorrowA
But see the Sage flies so no moreA
Now Friends drink and sing as beforeA
