Louvain Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFG HIBIJKLK MNONPNDN Q

A shrine where saints and scholars metA
And held aloft the torch of truthB
Lies smouldering 'neath fair Brabant's skiesC
A ruined heap war's prize in soothB
The Pilates of Teutonic bloodD
That fired the brand and flung the bombE
Now wash their hands of evil deedF
While all the world stands ghast and dumbG
-
Is this your culture sons of KantH
And ye who kneel 'round Goethe's throneI
To carry in your knapsacks deathB
To feel for man nor ruth nor moanI
What 'vails it now your mighty gunsJ
If God be mightier in the skyK
What 'vail your cities walls and towersL
If half your progress be a lieK
-
The smoking altars ruined archM
Of ancient church and Gothic faneN
Have felt the death stings of your shellsO
And speak in pity thro' LouvainN
Wheel back your guns your howitzers meltP
Forget your World Power's cursed planN
And sign in peace and not in bloodD
Dread Sinai's pact 'twixt God and ManN
-
For His Eminence Cardinal MerrierQ
