Achilles awoke in his ancient tombA
Hard by the coast of TroyB
He rattled his armor now full of dustC
And rubbed his eyes like a boyB
As he gazed on the ships of the allied fleetD
Ploughing the seas from afarE
Bent on their course to the DardanellesF
'Neath the light of Victory's starE
-
Why I've been asleep Achilles saidG
On the windy plains of TroyB
Three thousand years have turned to dustC
With their maddening mirth and joyB
Yet it seems but a day since Ilium fellH
Since Sinon spun out his taleI
And the Greeks returned from TenedosF
With a light and prosperous galeI
-
Three thousand years is a long long timeJ
But I'll doze for a thousand moreK
For I'm sick of the bluff of the Teuton hostsF
And the gas from each army corpsK
So lay me down in my ancient tombA
Where the Phrygian winds sweep byL
And I'll dream of the days when heroes foughtM
'Round the lofty walls of TroyB
