They Met But Once Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEF GHGHIJIJGHGH

They met but once in youth's sweet hourA
And never since that dayB
Hath absence time or grief had powerA
To chase that dream awayB
They've seen the suns of other skiesC
On other shores have sought delightD
But never more to bless their eyesC
Can come a dream so brightD
They met but once a day was allE
Of Love's young hopes they knewF
And still their hearts that day recallE
As fresh as then it flewF
-
Sweet dream of youth oh ne'er againG
Let either meet the browH
They left so smooth and smiling thenG
Or see what it is nowH
For Youth the spell was only thineI
From thee alone the enchantment flowsJ
That makes the world around thee shineI
With light thyself bestowsJ
They met but once oh ne'er againG
Let either meet the browH
They left so smooth and smiling thenG
Or see what it is nowH
