There Is A Bleak Desert. (air.--crescentini.) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAABC DDAEF GGAHH IIAJK

There is a bleak Desert where daylight grows wearyA
Of wasting its smile on a region so drearyA
What may that Desert beA
'Tis Life cheerless Life where the few joys that comeB
Are lost like that daylight for 'tis not their homeC
-
There is a lone Pilgrim before whose faint eyesD
The water he pants for but sparkles and fliesD
Who may that Pilgrim beA
'Tis Man hapless Man thro' this life tempted onE
By fair shining hopes that in shining are goneF
-
There is a bright Fountain thro' that Desert stealingG
To pure lips alone its refreshment revealingG
What may that Fountain beA
'Tis Truth holy Truth that like springs under groundH
By the gifted of Heaven alone can be foundH
-
There is a fair Spirit whose wand hath the spellI
To point where those waters in secrecy dwellI
Who may that Spirit beA
'Tis Faith humble Faith who hath learned that where'erJ
Her wand bends to worship the Truth must be thereK
