Odes Of Anacreon - Ode Lxxviii Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC CCDDDD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KKLL MMDDNNOO

When Cupid sees how thickly nowA
The snows of Time fall o'er my browA
Upon his wing of golden lightB
He passes with an eaglet's flightB
And flitting onward seems to sayC
Fare thee well thou'st had thy dayC
-
Cupid whose lamp has lent the rayC
That lights our life's meandering wayC
That God within this bosom stealingD
Hath wakened a strange mingled feelingD
Which pleases though so sadly teasingD
And teases though so sweetly pleasingD
-
-
-
Let me resign this wretched breathE
Since now remains to meF
No other balm than kindly deathE
To soothe my miseryF
-
-
-
I know thou lovest a brimming measureG
And art a kindly cordial hostH
But let me fill and drink at pleasureG
Thus I enjoy the goblet mostH
-
I fear that love disturbs my restI
Yet feel not love's impassioned careJ
I think there's madness in my breastI
Yet cannot find that madness thereJ
-
-
-
From dread Leucadia's frowning steepK
I'll plunge into the whitening deepK
And there lie cold to death resignedL
Since Love intoxicates my mindL
-
-
-
Mix me child a cup divineM
Crystal water ruby wineM
Weave the frontlet richly flushingD
O'er my wintry temples blushingD
Mix the brimmer Love and IN
Shall no more the contest tryN
Here upon this holy bowlO
I surrender all my soulO
