My Birth-day Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CCDEDEFGHGIJIJKLKLMN MNOHOFPPQJQJRARA| My birth day what a different sound | A |
| That word had in my youthful ears | B |
| And how each time the day comes round | A |
| Less and less white its mark appears | B |
| - | |
| When first our scanty years are told | C |
| It seems like pastime to grow old | C |
| And as Youth counts the shining links | D |
| That Time around him binds so fast | E |
| Pleased with the task he little thinks | D |
| How hard that chain will press at last | E |
| Vain was the man and false as vain | F |
| Who said were he ordained to run | G |
| His long career of life again | H |
| He would do all that he had done | G |
| Ah 'tis not thus the voice that dwells | I |
| In sober birth days speaks to me | J |
| Far otherwise of time it tells | I |
| Lavished unwisely carelessly | J |
| Of counsel mockt of talents made | K |
| Haply for high and pure designs | L |
| But oft like Israel's incense laid | K |
| Upon unholy earthly shrines | L |
| Of nursing many a wrong desire | M |
| Of wandering after Love too far | N |
| And taking every meteor fire | M |
| That crost my pathway for his star | N |
| All this it tells and could I trace | O |
| The imperfect picture o'er again | H |
| With power to add retouch efface | O |
| The lights and shades the joy and pain | F |
| How little of the past would stay | P |
| How quickly all should melt away | P |
| All but that Freedom of the Mind | Q |
| Which hath been more than wealth to me | J |
| Those friendships in my boyhood twined | Q |
| And kept till now unchangingly | J |
| And that dear home that saving ark | R |
| Where Love's true light at last I've found | A |
| Cheering within when all grows dark | R |
| And comfortless and stormy round | A |
