King Crack[1] And His Idols Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BABA CDCD EBEB FGFH IEIE JIKI

WRITTEN AFTER THE LATE NEGOTIATION FOR A NEW MINISTRYA
-
-
King Crack was the best of all possible KingsB
At least so his Courtiers would swear to you gladlyA
But Crack now and then would do heterodox thingsB
And at last took to worshipping Images sadlyA
-
Some broken down Idols that long had been placedC
In his father's old Cabinet pleased him so muchD
That he knelt down and worshipt tho' such was his tasteC
They were monstrous to look at and rotten to touchD
-
And these were the beautiful Gods of King CrackE
But his People disdaining to worship such thingsB
Cried aloud one and all Come your Godships must packE
You'll not do for us tho' you may do for KingsB
-
Then trampling these images under their feetF
They sent Crack a petition beginning Great CaesarG
We're willing to worship but only entreatF
That you'll find us some decenter godheads than these areH
-
I'll try says King Crack so they furnisht him modelsI
Of better shaped Gods but he sent them all backE
Some were chiselled too fine some had heads stead of noddlesI
In short they were all much too godlike for CrackE
-
So he took to his darling old Idols againJ
And just mending their legs and new bronzing their facesI
In open defiance of Gods and of manK
Set the monsters up grinning once more in their placesI
