Fairest put on awhileA
These pinions of light I bring theeB
And o'er thy own green isleA
In fancy let me wing theeB
Never did Ariel's plumeC
At golden sunset hoverD
O'er scenes so full of bloomC
As I shall waft thee overD
-
Fields where the Spring delaysE
And fearlessly meets the ardorD
Of the warm Summer's gazeE
With only her tears to guard herD
Rocks thro' myrtle boughsF
In grace majestic frowningG
Like some bold warrior's browsF
That Love hath just been crowningG
-
Islets so freshly fairH
That never hath bird come nigh themI
But from his course thro' airH
He hath been won down by themI
Types sweet maid of theeB
Whose look whose blush invitingG
Never did Love yet seeB
From Heaven without alightingG
-
Lakes where the pearl lies hidJ
And caves where the gem is sleepingG
Bright as the tears thy lidJ
Lets fall in lonely weepingG
Glens where Ocean comesK
To 'scape the wild wind's rancorD
And harbors worthiest homesL
Where Freedom's fleet can anchorD
-
Then if while scenes so grandM
So beautiful shine before theeB
Pride for thy own dear landM
Should haply be stealing o'er theeB
Oh let grief come firstN
O'er pride itself victoriousO
Thinking how man hath curstN
What Heaven had made so gloriousO
