O freedom power of life and lightB
Sole nurse of truth and gloryC
Bright dweller on the rocky cliffD
Lone wanderer on the seaC
Where'er the sunbeam slumbers brightB
On snow clad mountains hoaryC
Wherever flies the veering skiffD
O'er waves that breathe of theeC
Be thou the guide of all my thoughtE
The source of all my beingF
The genius of my waking mindG
The spirit of my dreamsH
To me thy magic spell be taughtE
The captive spirit freeingF
To wander with the ocean windG
Where'er thy beacon beamsH

O sweet it were in magic barkI
On one loved breast recliningF
To sail around the varied worldJ
To every blooming shoreK
And oft the gathering storm to markI
Its lurid folds combiningF
And safely ride with sails unfurledJ
Amid the tempest's roarK
And see the mighty breakers raveL
On cliff and sand and shingleM
And hear with long re echoing shockN
The caverned steeps replyA
And while the storm cloud and the waveL
In darkness seemed to mingleM
To skim beside the surf swept rockN
And glide uninjured byA

And when the summer seas were calmO
And summer skies were smilingF
And evening came with clouds of goldP
To gild the western waveL
And gentle airs and dews of balmO
The pensive mind beguilingF
Should call the Ocean Swain to foldP
His sea flocks in the caveL
Unearthly music's tenderest spellQ
With gentlest breezes blendingF
And waters softly rippling nearR
The prow's light course alongS
Should flow from Triton's winding shellQ
Through ocean's depths ascendingF
From where it charmed the Nereid's earT
Her coral bowers amongU

How sweet where eastern Nature smilesV
With swift and mazy motionW
Before the odour breathing breezeX
Of dewy morn to glideY
Or 'mid the thousand emerald islesV
That gem the southern oceanW
Where fruits and flowers from loveliest treesX
O'erhang the slumbering tideY
Or up some western stream to sailZ
To where its myriad fountainsA2
Roll down their everlasting rillsA2
From many a cloud capped heightB
Till mingling in some nameless valeZ
'Mid forest cinctured mountainsA2
The river cataract shakes the hillsA2
With vast and volumed mightB

The poison trees their leaves should shedB2
The yellow snake should perishC2
The beasts of blood should crouch and cowerD2
Where'er that vessel pastE2
All plagues of fens and vapours bredB2
That tropic fervors cherishC2
Should fly before its healing powerD2
Like mists before the blastE2
Where'er its keel the strand imprestE2
The young fruit's ripening clusterD2
The bird's free song its touch should greetE2
The opening flower's perfumeF2
The streams zalong the green earth's breastE2
Should roll in purer lustreD2
And love should heighten every sweetE2
And brighten every bloomF2

And Freedom thy meridian blazeA2
Should chase the clouds that lowerD2
Wherever mental twilight dimG2
Obscures Truth's vestal flameH2
Wherever Fraud and Slavery raiseA2
The throne of blood stained PowerD2
Wherever Fear and Ignorance hymnG2
Some fabled daemon's nameH2
The bard where torrents thunder downI2
Beside thy burning altarD2
Should kindle as in days of oldE2
The mind's ethereal fireD2
Ere yet beneath a tyrant's frownI2
The Muse's voice could falterD2
Or Flattery strung with chords of goldE2
The minstrel's venal IyreD2
