The Sea Of Death. - A Fragment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABBCC DDEEFFGG HHIJKKLMNNOOPPQQRSO TTUUOOMethought I saw | A |
Life swiftly treading over endless space | B |
And at her foot print but a bygone pace | B |
The ocean past which with increasing wave | C |
Swallow'd her steps like a pursuing grave | C |
- | |
Sad were my thoughts that anchor'd silently | D |
On the dead waters of that passionless sea | D |
Unstirr'd by any touch of living breath | E |
Silence hung over it and drowsy Death | E |
Like a gorged sea bird slept with folded wings | F |
On crowded carcases sad passive things | F |
That wore the thin gray surface like a veil | G |
Over the calmness of their features pale | G |
- | |
And there were spring faced cherubs that did sleep | H |
Like water lilies on that motionless deep | H |
How beautiful with bright unruffled hair | I |
On sleek unfretted brows and eyes that were | J |
Buried in marble tombs a pale eclipse | K |
And smile bedimpled cheeks and pleasant lips | K |
Meekly apart as if the soul intense | L |
Spake out in dreams of its own innocence | M |
And so they lay in loveliness and kept | N |
The birth night of their peace that Life e'en wept | N |
With very envy of their happy fronts | O |
For there were neighbor brows scarr'd by the brunts | O |
Of strife and sorrowing where Care had set | P |
His crooked autograph and marr'd the jet | P |
Of glassy locks with hollow eyes forlorn | Q |
And lips that curl'd in bitterness and scorn | Q |
Wretched as they had breathed of this world's pain | R |
And so bequeathed it to the world again | S |
Through the beholder's heart in heavy sighs | O |
- | |
So lay they garmented in torpid light | T |
Under the pall of a transparent night | T |
Like solemn apparitions lull'd sublime | U |
To everlasting rest and with them Time | U |
Slept as he sleeps upon the silent face | O |
Of a dark dial in a sunless place | O |
