The Sea Of Death. - A Fragment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBCC DDEEFFGG HHIJKKLMNNOOPPQQRSO TTUUOO

Methought I sawA
Life swiftly treading over endless spaceB
And at her foot print but a bygone paceB
The ocean past which with increasing waveC
Swallow'd her steps like a pursuing graveC
-
Sad were my thoughts that anchor'd silentlyD
On the dead waters of that passionless seaD
Unstirr'd by any touch of living breathE
Silence hung over it and drowsy DeathE
Like a gorged sea bird slept with folded wingsF
On crowded carcases sad passive thingsF
That wore the thin gray surface like a veilG
Over the calmness of their features paleG
-
And there were spring faced cherubs that did sleepH
Like water lilies on that motionless deepH
How beautiful with bright unruffled hairI
On sleek unfretted brows and eyes that wereJ
Buried in marble tombs a pale eclipseK
And smile bedimpled cheeks and pleasant lipsK
Meekly apart as if the soul intenseL
Spake out in dreams of its own innocenceM
And so they lay in loveliness and keptN
The birth night of their peace that Life e'en weptN
With very envy of their happy frontsO
For there were neighbor brows scarr'd by the bruntsO
Of strife and sorrowing where Care had setP
His crooked autograph and marr'd the jetP
Of glassy locks with hollow eyes forlornQ
And lips that curl'd in bitterness and scornQ
Wretched as they had breathed of this world's painR
And so bequeathed it to the world againS
Through the beholder's heart in heavy sighsO
-
So lay they garmented in torpid lightT
Under the pall of a transparent nightT
Like solemn apparitions lull'd sublimeU
To everlasting rest and with them TimeU
Slept as he sleeps upon the silent faceO
Of a dark dial in a sunless placeO
