Like the two Kings of Brentford smelling at one nosegayA
-
-
In Brentford town of old renownB
There lived a Mister BrayC
Who fell in love with Lucy BellD
And so did Mr ClayC
-
To see her ride from HammersmithE
By all it was allowedF
Such fair outsides are seldom seenG
Such Angels on a CloudF
-
Said Mr Bray to Mr ClayC
You choose to rival meH
And court Miss Bell but there your courtI
No thoroughfare shall beH
-
Unless you now give up your suitJ
You may repent your loveK
I who have shot a pigeon matchL
Can shoot a turtle doveK
-
So pray before you woo her moreM
Consider what you doN
If you pop aught to Lucy BellD
I'll pop it into youN
-
Said Mr Clay to Mr BrayC
Your threats I quite explodeO
One who has been a volunteerP
Knows how to prime and loadO
-
And so I say to you unlessQ
Your passion quiet keepsR
I who have shot and hit bulls' eyesS
May chance to hit a sheep'sR
-
Now gold is oft for silver changedT
And that for copper redU
But these two went away to giveV
Each other change for leadU
-
But first they sought a friend apieceW
This pleasant thought to giveV
When they were dead they thus should haveX
Two seconds still to liveY
-
To measure out the ground not longA
The seconds then forboreP
And having taken one rash stepZ
They took a dozen moreP
-
They next prepared each pistol panA2
Against the deadly strifeB2
By putting in the prime of deathC2
Against the prime of lifeB2
-
Now all was ready for the foesD2
But when they took their standsE2
Fear made them tremble so they foundF2
They both were shaking handsE2
-
Said Mr C to Mr BH
Here one of us may fallG2
And like St Paul's Cathedral nowH2
Be doomed to have a ballG2
-
I do confess I did attachL
Misconduct to your nameI2
If I withdraw the charge will thenJ2
Your ramrod do the sameI2
-
Said Mr B I do agreeH
But think of Honor's CourtsK2
If we go off without a shotL2
There will be strange reportsK2
-
But look the morning now is brightM2
Though cloudy it begunN2
Why can't we aim above as ifO2
We had called out the sunN2
-
Soup into the harmless airP
Their bullets they did sendP2
And may all other duels haveX
That upshot in the endP2
