Summer is gone on swallows' wingsA
And Earth has buried all her flowersB
No more the lark the linnet singsA
But Silence sits in faded bowersB
There is a shadow on the plainC
Of Winter ere he comes againD
There is in woods a solemn soundE
Of hollow warnings whisper'd roundE
As Echo in her deep recessF
For once had turn'd a prophetessG
Shuddering Autumn stops to listH
And breathes his fear in sudden sighsI
With clouded face and hazel eyesI
That quench themselves and hide in mistH
Yes Summer's gone like pageant brightJ
Its glorious days of golden lightJ
Are gone the mimic suns that quiverK
Then melt in Time's dark flowing riverK
Gone the sweetly scented breezeL
That spoke in music to the treesL
Gone for damp and chilly breathM
As if fresh blown o'er marble seasL
Or newly from the lungs of DeathM
Gone its virgin roses' blushesN
Warm as when Aurora rushesN
Freshly from the God's embraceO
With all her shame upon her faceO
Old Time hath laid them in the mouldP
Sure he is blind as well as oldP
Whose hand relentless never sparesQ
Young cheeks so beauty bright as theirsQ
Gone are the flame eyed lovers nowR
From where so blushing blest they tarriedP
Under the hawthorn's blossom boughR
Gone for Day and Night are marriedP
All the light of love is fledP
Alas that negro breasts should hideP
The lips that were so rosy redP
At morning and at even tideP
Delightful Summer then adieuP
Till thou shalt visit us anewP
But who without regretful sighS
Can say adieu and see thee flyS
Not he that e'er hath felt thy pow'rT
His joy expanding like a flow'rT
That cometh after rain and snowU
Looks up at heaven and learns to glowU
Not he that fled from Babel strifeV
To the green sabbath land of lifeV
To dodge dull Care 'mid clustered treesL
And cool his forehead in the breezeL
Whose spirit weary worn perchanceW
Shook from its wings a weight of griefX
And perch'd upon an aspen leafX
For every breath to make it danceW
Farewell on wings of sombre stainC
That blacken in the last blue skiesI
Thou fly'st but thou wilt come againD
On the gay wings of butterfliesI
Spring at thy approach will sproutP
Her new Corinthian beauties outP
Leaf woven homes where twitter wordsY
Will grow to songs and eggs to birdsY
Ambitious buds shall swell to flowersB
And April smiles to sunny hoursB
Bright days shall be and gentle nightsZ
Full of soft breath and echo lightsZ
As if the god of sun time keptP
His eyes half open while he sleptP
Roses shall be where roses wereK
Not shadows but realityP
As if they never perished thereA2
But slept in immortalityP
Nature shall thrill with new delightP
And Time's relumined river runB2
Warm as young blood and dazzling brightP
As if its source were in the sunB2
But say hath Winter then no charmsC2
Is there no joy no gladness warmsD2
His aged heart no happy wilesE2
To cheat the hoary one to smilesE2
Onward he comes the cruel NorthF2
Pours his furious whirlwind forthF2
Before him and we breathe the breathM
Of famish'd bears that howl to deathM
Onward he comes from the rocks that blanchG2
O'er solid streams that never flowU
His tears all ice his locks all snowU
Just crept from some huge avalancheG2
A thing half breathing and half warmH2
As if one spark began to glowU
Within some statue's marble formH2
Or pilgrim stiffened in the stormH2
Oh will not Mirth's light arrows failI2
To pierce that frozen coat of mailI2
Oh will not joy but strive in vainC
To light up those glazed eyes againD
No take him in and blaze the oakJ2
And pour the wine and warm the aleI2
His sides shall shake to many a jokeJ2
His tongue shall thaw in many a taleI2
His eyes grow bright his heart be gayK2
And even his palsy charm'd awayK2
What heeds he then the boisterous shoutP
Of angry winds that scowl withoutP
Like shrewish wives at tavern doorL2
What heeds he then the wild uproarL2
Of billows bursting on the shoreL2
In dashing waves in howling breezeL
There is a music that can charm himM2
When safe and sheltered and at easeL
He hears the storm that cannot harm himM2
But hark those shouts that sudden dinN2
Of little hearts that laugh withinN2
Oh take him where the youngsters playK2
And he will grow as young as theyK2
They come they come each blue eyed SportP
The Twelfth Night King and all his courtP
'Tis Mirth fresh crown'd with misletoeP
Music with her merry fiddlesO2
Joy 'on light fantastic toe 'P2
Wit with all his jests and riddlesO2
Singing and dancing as they goU
And Love young Love among the restP
A welcome nor unbidden guestP
But still for Summer dost thou grieveQ2
Then read our Poets they shall weaveQ2
A garden of green fancies stillR2
Where thy wish may rove at willR2
They have kept for after treatsS2
The essences of summer sweetsS2
And echoes of its songs that windP
In endless music through the mindP
They have stamp'd in visible tracesN
The 'thoughts that breathe ' in words that shineT2
The flights of soul in sunny placesN
To greet and company with thineT2
These shall wing thee on to flow'rsN
The past or future that shall seemU2
All the brighter in thy dreamU2
For blowing in such desert hoursN
The summer never shines so brightP
As thought of in a winter's nightP
And the sweetest loveliest roseN
Is in the bud before it blowsN
The dear one of the lover's heartP
Is painted to his longing eyesN
In charms she ne'er can realizeN
But when she turns again to partP
Dream thou then and bind thy browR
With wreath of fancy roses nowR
And drink of Summer in the cupV2
Where the Muse hath mix'd it upV2
The 'dance and song and sun burnt mirth 'P2
With the warm nectar of the earthW2
Drink 'twill glow in every veinC
And thou shalt dream the winter throughP
Then waken to the sun againD
And find thy Summer Vision trueP
