Sigh on sad heart for Love's eclipseA
And Beauty's fairest queenB
Though 'tis not for my peasant lipsA
To soil her name betweenB
A king might lay his sceptre downC
But I am poor and noughtD
The brow should wear a golden crownC
That wears her in its thoughtD
The diamonds glancing in her hairE
Whose sudden beams surpriseF
Might bid such humble hopes bewareE
The glancing of her eyesF
Yet looking once I look'd too longG
And if my love is sinH
Death follows on the heels of wrongG
And kills the crime withinH
Her dress seem'd wove of lily leavesI
It was so pure and fineJ
O lofty wears and lowly weavesI
But hodden gray is mineJ
And homely hose must step apartD
Where garter'd princes standD
But may he wear my love at heartD
That wins her lily handD
Alas there's far from russet friezeK
To silks and satin gownsL
But I doubt if God made like degreesK
In courtly hearts and clownsL
My father wrong'd a maiden's mirthM
And brought her cheeks to blameN
And all that's lordly of my birthM
Is my reproach and shameN
'Tis vain to weep 'tis vain to sighO
'Tis vain this idle speechP
For where her happy pearls do lieO
My tears may never reachP
Yet when I'm gone e'en lofty prideD
May say of what has beenH
His love was nobly born and diedD
Though all the rest was meanB
My speech is rude but speech is weakQ
Such love as mine to tellR
Yet had I words I dare not speakQ
So Lady fare thee wellR
I will not wish thy better stateD
Was one of low degreeS
But I must weep that partial fateD
Made such a churl of meS
