Coming events cast their shadow beforeA

I had a vision in the summer lightB
Sorrow was in it and my inward sightB
Ached with sad images The touch of tearsC
Gushed down my cheeks the figured woes of yearsD
Casting their shadows across sunny hoursE
Oh there was nothing sorrowful in flowersE
Wooing the glances of an April sunF
Or apple blossoms opening one by oneF
Their crimson bosoms or the twittered wordsG
And warbled sentences of merry birdsG
Or the small glitter and the humming wingsH
Of golden flies and many colored thingsH
Oh these were nothing sad nor to see HerI
Sitting beneath the comfortable stirI
Of early leaves casting the playful graceJ
Of moving shadows in so fair a faceJ
Nor in her brow serene nor in the loveK
Of her mild eyes drinking the light aboveK
With a long thirst nor in her gentle smileL
Nor in her hand that shone blood red the whileL
She raised it in the sun All these were dearM
To heart and eye but an invisible fearM
Shook in the trees and chilled upon the airN
And if one spot was laughing brightest thereN
My soul most sank and darkened in despairN
As if the shadows of a curtained roomO
Haunted me in the sun as if the bloomO
Of early flow'rets had no sweets for meP
Nor apple blossoms any blush to seeP
As if the hour had brought too bright a dayQ
And little birds were all too gay too gayQ
As if the beauty of that Lovely OneF
Were all a fable Full before the sunF
Stood Death and cast a shadow long beforeA
Like a dark pall enshrouding her all o'erI
Till eyes and lips and smiles were all no moreA
