The Casterbridge Captains Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHEH IJKJ LCMN OPQR STST

THREE captains went to Indian warsA
And only one returnedB
Their mate of yore he singly woreC
The laurels all had earnedB
-
At home he sought the ancient aisleD
Wherein untrumped of fameE
The three had sat in pupilageF
And each had carved his nameE
-
The names rough hewn of equal sizeG
Stood on the panel stillH
Unequal since 'Twas theirs to aimE
Mine was it to fulfilH
-
Who saves his life shall lose it friendsI
Outspake the preacher thenJ
Unweeting he his listener whoK
Looked at the names againJ
-
That he had come and they'd been stayedL
'Twas but the chance of warC
Another chance and they'd sat hereM
And he had lain afarN
-
Yet saw he something in the livesO
Of those who'd ceased to liveP
That rounded them with majestyQ
Which living failed to giveR
-
Transcendent triumph in returnS
No longer lit his brainT
Transcendence rayed the distant urnS
Where slept the fallen twainT
