Blithe the bright dawn found meA
Rest with strength had crown'd meA
Sweet the birds sang around meA
Sport was their toilB
-
The horn its clang was keepingC
Forth the fox was creepingC
Round each dame stood weepingC
O'er the prowler's spoilB
-
Hark the foe is callingC
Fast the woods are fallingC
Scenes and sights appallingC
Mark the wasted soilB
-
War and confiscationD
Curse the fallen nationD
Gloom and desolationD
Shade the lost land o'erE
-
Chill the winds are blowingC
Death aloft is goingC
Peace or hope seems growingC
For our race no moreF
-
Hark the foe is callingC
Fast the woods are fallingC
Scenes and sights appallingC
Throng the blood stained shoreF
-
Nobles once high heartedG
From their homes have partedG
Scattered scared and startedG
By a base born bandH
-
Spots that once were cheeringC
Girls beloved endearingC
Friends from whom I'm steeringC
Take this parting tearI
