OH brothers friends down by the seaA
We can thy voices hearB
And painful is their tone and freeA
Upon each brother's earB
-
We hear each voice pitch'd strong and highC
And could we see you nowD
Our hearts would heave another sighC
At each beclouded browD
-
We hear thy voice from day to dayE
In one long doleful strainF
Oh tell us why oh brethren sayE
Why sounds that voice of painF
-
Are we not one in race and creedG
Rul'd by one gracious queenH
And we have all receiv'd our meedG
Of praise and pelf I weenH
-
Why vex her now who's rul'd so longI
Upon her virtuous throneH
Why sing her such a doleful songI
And send her such a groanH
-
And why annoy that whiten'd headG
Our land's adopted sonH
Who wisely drew love's slender threadG
And wedded us in oneH
-
And firmer yet he wish'd to bindG
Us to our country's wealJ
And see plann'd by his master mindG
One band of glitt'ring steelJ
-
One shining track which stretches farK
From wild Columbia's shoreL
To where those doleful voices areK
And the Atlantic's roarL
-
Oh brethren friends down by the seaA
With us your voices raiseM
Instead of groans oh shout with gleeA
With us one shout of praiseM
-
And trust him brethren trust us tooG
Seek not from us to goN
Our country's good is weal for youG
And common all our woeN
