The blight of life the demon Thought BYRONA
-
-
With demon's shriek or angel's voiceB
'Mid hellish gloom or heav'nly lightC
Thought haunts our path o'er land and seaD
And dwells with us by day and nightC
-
In roomy hall or narrow hutE
It withers blasts and kills with gloomF
Or gently onward smooths the pathG
Of him who gives the tyrant roomF
-
With siren voice it soothes our woeH
It dwells with us in blissful dreamsI
But when we wake it tells us thenJ
That it is far from what it seemsI
-
Rebellious o'er its prostrate slaveK
Its iron chain of bondage swingsL
Or govern'd by a master handM
In numbers loud and strong it singsL
-
And with its keys of rarest mouldN
Its stores of hoarded wealth unlocksL
It dives for man beneath the seaL
And cleaves for him the hardest rocksL
-
Forever thus it lives and actsL
With angel host or demon throngO
To sing with voice of heav'nly loveP
Or shout with dismal hellish songO
-
Thus shall it live thus shall it actQ
While ages shall their cycles rollR
It leaves us when we reach the graveK
But oh it rises with the soulR
-
And still it lives in that beyondS
As here it lives in this our sphereT
To light our road and cheer our pathG
Or torture us with nameless fearT
