The Truant Boy. After Moore's "minstrel Boy." Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FFFFGEHE IFIFJKJK LHLHMKMK| Oh the truant boy to the woods has gone | A |
| And you ne'er alas can find him | B |
| He's strapp'd his empty school bag on | C |
| For his books are left behind him | B |
| - | |
| He's gone to shake the beechnuts down | D |
| From a height 'twould make you shiver | E |
| And stain his hands a gipsy brown | D |
| With the walnuts by the river | E |
| - | |
| Away from school said this youth so free | F |
| Tho' all the world should praise thee | F |
| I'd rather climb this walnut tree | F |
| Because it's such a daisy | F |
| The truant fell but the stunning shock | G |
| Could not bring his proud soul under | E |
| I'll try again and here I go | H |
| To get those nuts by thunder | E |
| - | |
| So he tightly strapp'd his bag so neat | I |
| This soul of spunk and bravery | F |
| And said If I in this get beat | I |
| I will go back to slavery | F |
| But he climb'd the tree and got the nuts | J |
| And wander'd home in the gloaming | K |
| Well knowing as the door he shuts | J |
| That his pa with rage is foaming | K |
| - | |
| But he gets some bread and steals to bed | L |
| With his heart fill'd up with sorrow | H |
| And shudders as he looks ahead | L |
| And thinks of school to morrow | H |
| He knows the score of lies he'll tell | M |
| Will scarce prevent a licking | K |
| And he sadly wonders if 'tis well | M |
| To go thus walnut picking | K |
