The sky was dark with threat'ning cloudsA
And fiercely on the raging seaB
The roaring tempest wilder sweptC
And fiercer rag'd old GalileeB
-
Deep dark and wild the waters roll'dD
And fast across the lurid skyE
The black clouds pass'd as if to hideF
The lights of heav'n from human eyeE
-
A little boat from crest to crestG
Was lash'd about and wildly thrownH
While down below lay timid soulsI
Too faint to shriek too weak to groanH
-
While thunders roll'd and lightning flash'dJ
And fiercer onward rush'd the wavesK
Deep down below these mortals look'dL
With freighted mind to wat'ry gravesK
-
The helmsman held the rudder stillM
But unavailing his controlN
The blasts grew wild and wilder yetO
And louder grew the thunder's rollN
-
His hand grew faint his heart grew sickP
As still he saw the lightning's glareQ
And heard the thunders toll his doomR
And voices shriek it in the airQ
-
Air water heavens all combin'dS
Seem'd on the ship their wrath to pourT
Combin'd to sink it in the tideF
And keep it ever from the shoreT
-
One hope was left and only oneU
The Master on a pillow sleptC
And to him these affrighted onesV
So weak of faith in silence creptC
-
With gentle touch they wake the LordW
And half in hope and half in fearX
They cry save us or we're lostY
O Master Lord wilt thou not hearZ
-
With gentle mien the Master roseA2
And to his mild but mighty willM
The thunders winds and billows bow'dB2
And answer'd yes his peace be stillM
-
O fearful ones why do you fearX
Then said the mighty Lord of allC2
Why trust ye not ye faithless onesV
And call in faith whene'er ye callC2
-
Thus on the raging sea of lifeD2
While billows wild around us swellE2
Let faith in Christ our fears disperseF2
Let trust in Him our sorrows quellE2
-
When bitter anguish fills our breastG
And weak and trembling grows our handG2
Give Christ the rudder of our shipH2
And he will bring us safe to landG2
-
For wind and sea and thunder's rollN
His great command at once obeyI2
And those who trust Him He will leadJ2
Through storm and gloom to perfect dayI2
