The wind last night was wild and strongA
It shriek'd it whistl'd and it roar'dB
And went with whirl and swoop alongA
'Mid falling trees and crashing boardB
-
The timbers creak'd the rafters sway'dC
And e'en some roofs upheav'd and tornD
Came crashing to the earth and laidC
Before the view upon the mornD
-
The air seem'd like some monstrous thingE
By its uncurbed passion heldF
Like dreadful dragon on the wingE
So horribly it scream'd and yell'dF
-
Now venting a triumphant shoutG
And ever and anon a groanH
Like fiend from prison lately outG
Or like unhappy chain'd one's moanH
-
There was a lofty pine I knewI
Each morn and eve I passed it byJ
To such a lofty height it grewI
It caught at once each passing eyeJ
-
It stood alone and proudly stoodK
With straight and clean and lofty stemL
All other trees it seemed to viewI
As though it scorn'd to live with themL
-
Full many a winter's snow had whirl'dM
About its base and settl'd thereN
And many an autumn mist had curl'dM
About its head so high in airN
-
Full many a blast had spent in vainO
Its force for ever like a rockP
It stood each persevering strainO
And long defied the tempest's shockP
-
But yesternight it crashing fellQ
And now this morn I see it lieJ
I knew the brave old tree so wellQ
A tear almost bedims my eyeJ
-
But brave old trees like brave old menR
Must feel at last the fatal strokeS
That dashest them to earth againR
Tho' lofty pine or mighty oakS
-
I'll miss old tree thy lofty stemL
Outlin'd against the distant skyJ
But 'tis no gain to fret for themL
For men or trees that fall and dieJ
