The Pine Tree Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLIL MNMN OPOP QJQJ RSRS LJLJThe wind last night was wild and strong | A |
It shriek'd it whistl'd and it roar'd | B |
And went with whirl and swoop along | A |
'Mid falling trees and crashing board | B |
- | |
The timbers creak'd the rafters sway'd | C |
And e'en some roofs upheav'd and torn | D |
Came crashing to the earth and laid | C |
Before the view upon the morn | D |
- | |
The air seem'd like some monstrous thing | E |
By its uncurbed passion held | F |
Like dreadful dragon on the wing | E |
So horribly it scream'd and yell'd | F |
- | |
Now venting a triumphant shout | G |
And ever and anon a groan | H |
Like fiend from prison lately out | G |
Or like unhappy chain'd one's moan | H |
- | |
There was a lofty pine I knew | I |
Each morn and eve I passed it by | J |
To such a lofty height it grew | I |
It caught at once each passing eye | J |
- | |
It stood alone and proudly stood | K |
With straight and clean and lofty stem | L |
All other trees it seemed to view | I |
As though it scorn'd to live with them | L |
- | |
Full many a winter's snow had whirl'd | M |
About its base and settl'd there | N |
And many an autumn mist had curl'd | M |
About its head so high in air | N |
- | |
Full many a blast had spent in vain | O |
Its force for ever like a rock | P |
It stood each persevering strain | O |
And long defied the tempest's shock | P |
- | |
But yesternight it crashing fell | Q |
And now this morn I see it lie | J |
I knew the brave old tree so well | Q |
A tear almost bedims my eye | J |
- | |
But brave old trees like brave old men | R |
Must feel at last the fatal stroke | S |
That dashest them to earth again | R |
Tho' lofty pine or mighty oak | S |
- | |
I'll miss old tree thy lofty stem | L |
Outlin'd against the distant sky | J |
But 'tis no gain to fret for them | L |
For men or trees that fall and die | J |
