Where craggy hills round Madoc riseA
With scenic grandeur boldB
Where frowning rocks from wooded heightsC
Look down so stern and coldB
-
On peaceful vales and silent lakesD
And islets wild and fairE
Where trees in fadeless beauty cladF
Display their verdure thereE
-
Where men undaunted by the forceG
Of nature's stern arrayH
Determin'd drive a prosp'rous courseG
And honorable wayH
-
Here doth the oak rear high its formI
The spreading beech besideJ
And here the hemlock meets the stormI
With branches stretching wideJ
-
The pine with straight and lofty stemK
The birch whose shapen rindL
Sails o'er the lakes by dusky handsM
Or favorable windL
-
Such trees as those are widely knownN
And many more besideJ
And may be found from Madoc's hillsO
To Huron's waters wideJ
-
Right dear they are to sturdy heartsP
To pioneers their nameQ
Lights up the thoughts of other daysR
With bright and cheerful flameQ
-
But dearer far than all of theseS
Than all from sea to seaT
To Canada's brave sons of toilU
Is the stout maple treeT
-
The maple tree the maple treeT
Because its leaf so fairE
Is emblem of our CanadaV
And all our hopes are thereE
-
Our country thrives and so shall weT
On this our native sodW
If we respect our maple treeT
And worship only GodW
-
The maple leaf the maple leafX
Tho' in the fall it fadeY
May it but die to bloom againZ
And brighten up the gladeY
-
Oh deeper strike each year thy rootsA2
Young Canada's fair treeT
That no rude hand may tear thee upB2
Thou emblem of the freeT
-
If on thy branch an eagle boldB
Or other bird of preyH
Shall dare with haughtiness to sitC2
May it soon fly awayH
