Sympathy Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDE FGFGHIHI JKJK LMNM OPOPQRQR FSFS

'Mid forces all that work unseenA
And cheer or warm the human breastB
Thou Sympathy hath ever beenC
In active power amid the restB
When raging hate or heedless loveD
Aspir'd to rule and reign aloneE
Thou still did keep thy place aboveD
And rul'd serenely from thy throneE
-
Thou ever dost assert thy rightF
And walkest on thy gentle wayG
To rule with mild persuasive mightF
But with a strong unconscious swayG
What pow'r thou hast o'er human heartsH
We daily feel we daily seeI
For men and women act their partsH
Encourag'd and upheld by theeI
-
For in an unseen current runsJ
From heart to heart from soul to soulK
Thy force like heat from genial sunsJ
To permeate and warm the wholeK
-
Not always tho' to warm and cheerL
At times thy influence is chillM
And checks the noble rage of thoughtN
As ice can check a flowing rillM
-
One cutting word of ours can wiltO
Or blast the young heart's fairest flow'rP
And tumble down air castles builtO
By this unseen affection's pow'rP
That man is brave who acts his partQ
'Mid comrades faithful known and braveR
But braver far is he whose heartQ
Upholds itself upon the waveR
-
For men have shrunk with coward frightF
At terrors which they ne'er might feelS
Had Sympathy's strange magic mightF
Inspir'd their hearts to face the steelS
